i’ve been sort of out of it for a while, and am wondering who makes a nice 2mm wetsuit jacket these days? O’Neill still the best?

You should order one from @Jonesea. He makes the best.

Other than that I'd say go for an Xcel topper.

I'm a big fan of the Matuse Chapter One top. The rest of their products aren't anything amazing but the Chapter 1 is the best top on the planet in my opinion. Order one size up though. Jonesea is rad but I've never worn one of his tops. They look cool though!

The best 2mm top is the Roxy. It has these two bulges of neoprene on the chest for extra cushioning that is a nice perk.

But to be serious the Rip Curl E Bomb is outstanding.

O'NEILL HYPERFREAK RG8 1.5M GLIDE.

This one is great. Will buy again. The stretchyness and comfort are great. Last awhile aswell.

Xcel has a few nice sale items.  Take a look.

I love the feel of the geoprene in my Matuse spring suit. I bet the jacket is nice too.
If you want a retro front zipper style, so you can look cool with it unzipped...
nineplus uses the same sort of Yamamoto rubber I think.

Thanks for the info. Matuse seems to be on the high-end side, and also Isurus? Is the geoprene or whatever they call the neoprene alternative good stuff? They say it soaks up less water.

Matuse claims Geoprene's cells are nearly all closed, while most wetsuit neoprenes are presumably less than 75% closed, meaning they can get full of water...  If so, substantial advantage.  It looks like Volte is using the same material.  Looks like they still can't take credit cards from the US; have to email them.

My Geoprene vest from Matuse, no nylon outer layer, is quite slick.  An O'Neill is textured.  I assume just a choice in manufacturing.

Patagonia of course has switched over to 85% natural rubber using Yulex.  At the moment, I think they're alone.

It's very soft and comfortable. I've only had my matuse hoplite 2/2 springsuit (~$60 on sale, (thanks ww for the heads up)) for a year so I can't vouch for durability. I like the simple look too.

I have an Xcel and a Hurley top, the Xcel is nicer but the Hurley  is fine.  Been curious about need essentials, they are pretty affordable online.  I borrowed my brother's mateuse out in Hawaii last winter and itrashed me up, but that might have been just a me problem.

I like Hurley wetsuit gear for stretch/performance and comfort, but they're not the most durable products. Rip Curl makes stuff that's really warm and lasts a long time. Order tops one size up if you're borderline.
