Found via Ambulantes, a "list of trusted organizations offering aid" which in turn I found out about from an email from the American Association for the Advancement of Science, which is doing some fundraising for PR from its members.  

In case anyone’s still pondering, there’s no need to overthink things:  Salvation Army and Compassion Interntional turn more of your money into help on the ground.

Even if you don’t care for the message, the effectiveness is proven.
