just checked it there on my way home from work......they're still working.....so they say it won't negatively impact the surf !?? Can any of our engineer 2ndlighters please explain how placing structure outside the surf zone can possibly be a good thing!?!? It seems like it will create more "washboarding" (deep-shallow-deep-repeat) which makes for crappy surf

I surfed there this afternoon and was wondering to myself while choking on the barge and tugboat fumes if this was the begining of the end.....

Maybe good for larger NE winter swells?

News 13 article

And, then again, the "reef" may be useful in blocking/disrupting certain larger swells and thereby creating a "channel" and/or helping form some nice left shoulders as individual big NE waves fill into the "gap" between the "reef" and the shore? Wishful thinkin?

It's not going to do much for surf at all.  Minimal impact besides any subtle impacts to longer period waves that will feel the bottom over that short run of rock.  Why do you call that a reef and not the rocks that are on the shore a reef?  Why do we have a state park south of us called "bathtub reef" that is made of the same thing and we call this worm rock?  QUIT CALLING our reef WORM ROCKS.  OKAY?

The low mounding structures that form living reefs along Florida's coast are made by numerous tiny marine bristle worms of the family Sabellariidae (sa - bell- AIR - id - ee). Each worm settles onto a hard, durable surface and begins to construct a protective tube out of the surrounding sand. The Sabellariid worms attach their tubes to their neighbors' tubes, forming large colonies which grow into massive mounding reefs. These reefs are sometimes exposed at low tide, creating tide pools and providing habitat for many marine organisms. An outstanding example of this type of reef is found at Bathtub Reef Park on Hutchinson Island, just 3 miles south of the Florida Oceanographic Society, and just north of the St. Lucie Inlet.

The species of Sabellariid worm found in our area is called Phragmatopoma caudata. The Adult worms are up to 2 inches long and 1/8 inch in diameter, although most worms are closer to 3?4 inch long. ese worms can be found building their reefs on limestone and coquina formations, jetties and pilings from Cape Canaveral to the south end of Biscayne Bay.

Many different species of marine organisms live around these reefs. This makes them excellent places to go snorkeling on calm days.

These worms build sand hoods over their tubes to protect themselves from drying out in the sun at low tide. Walking on a living worm reef crushes these hoods into the tubes, sealing them, and killing the worms. People should never walk on, scrape, or break pieces off the worm reefs.

I can't see how this is good for our surf... hope I am wrong. They are using artificial reef to justify covering up existing reef, so that the beach can be  widened.

Yeah, well considering a certain very nearby spot is one of the few spots in FL that do well with "larger NE winter swells"..... I doubt this is good for anything

Isn't this what they did to Vero Beach?

How did that work out

Well, then again, they had to come up with something "fancy' and cheap enough that would placate us "rubes", while they dump sand to enhance condo values.

I truly hope everyone doesnt get SCREWED!

Middles & Blowhole were the 2 best spots in N. FL (some can argue the state when it was "ON")  Army corp dumped sand on the beach in Anastasia Park and they've been RIP ever since (Especially Middles.... at least the general area that was once Blowhole will occ have a good wave, but nothing like it was )

wishful thinking:  They dump 2 huge piles of rocks in triangle shapes, with one pinacle facing NE and the other facing SE

They dumped a bunch of rocks about 1,000 ft offshore in Vero to create an artificial reef in a spot that didn't have any good surf. It had no effect one way or the other. Never seen a wave break from it. It depends on how shallow the reef will be and apparently in Vero it's too deep to cause a wave.

Not really Green ...I was there when that pic was snapped, it was nowhere near as good or as big as that picture makes it appear.

As in, not even remotely close.

Personally seen Pelican hold a 8-10' swell when most other beaches were closing out or elbow to elbow for 100 yardss...  got madd pics of this place going off huge.  I guarantee this "bright idea" from government is going to destroy one of the few secret big wave spots left in the 321.  The big ones will break outside of the artificial reef and it's going to be a hazard.  Get your lawsuits ready...
