Hey all, I want to start protecting my skin better.

Sun screen is nice and I always apply it but I want to take the next step and start using sun protective clothing while surfing, diving, etc..

 

 

Any suggestions? I read an online article (validity=?) claiming that a normal hanes white tshirt offered substantial protection when compared with a more expensive sun protective rash guard. What are your personal experiences?

 

Any reccomendations?

I've never gotten much sun through a rash guard and I've certainly never been burned while wearing one. T-shirts will work, but I prefer to keep the sun off of my arms too and long sleeve t-shirts get pretty sloppy when they are wet.

The last few rash shirts I bought have a SPF rating on them and I not sure what the rating is based on, but they do keep the sun off of me.

A good rashguard gives good sun protection for sure. A kook hat for your face and perhaps sun glasses if you want everything covered.

I wear the loose, long sleeve UPF50 fishing shirts

Several years ago, I picked up a white long-sleeve rash guard with hoodie built in. The hoodie had a cinch-type drawstring. When cinched tight, it would cover part of my cheeks, forehead, and the big bald spot on top. Being white and made of lycra, it wasn't super hot. Still a little uncomfortable in the summer (warmth due to overall thickness), but nowhere near as bulky as trying to wear a hat. I don't wear glasses in the water, but if you had specs and put them on first, the hood would help keep the strap in place.

I think it had a UV rating at the time of purchase, but I don't know how well those products (UV-rated clothing) hold up (UV protection-wise) after use and washing.

Either way, a rash guard offers substantial protection, and won't wash off like sunblock does.

The Columbia's although pricey are super nice, stay cool and have pockets for fishing stuff.

The face and neck buffs work pretty well too

My buddy just started repping for Anetik Performance wear. The shirts are spf30. MTB just started carrying the line. I'm going to try these out in long sleeve. I've always been fine in a basic rashgaurd as well.

Your average t-shirt will not work. I use a rash guard, which does the trick.

I wear a long sleeve, turtle neck rash guard especially mid day or when it's hot. Besides the sun protection I actually stay cooler (as log as you keep it wet) and it floats me. I'm an excellent swimmer but I sink like a rock. A few years ago I broke a leash 100 yards offshore or so in well overhead CR. It was nice to just float between body surfing the sets in. I take it in the shower with me, soap it up , rinse and let it dry. It stays fairly un-funky. Washing machines were them out quicker.

Some periodic pull down needed on bigger days, nothing too irritating. I wear a buff too occasionally, I've had 7 mohs surgery on face already. Need to start wearing bucket hat too.

Buy a size down from the tshirt size you wear.

O'neil & quicksilver rash guards seem To work well all these years. Tight fitting for surfing and loose fitting for kayaking/ fishing Or flat water sup paddling.

A t shirt is better than nothing - I've done for years - but I do believe the newer proper "spf" long sleeve shirts / rashguards are better at protection, just can be costly like everything these days! 

I think wearing a hoodie & snow goggles would be pretty funny

Wear it, for sure. And the goggles - well, I have cataracts from years of sun exposure. So yeah, those actually aren't a bad idea. I'm so blind that I am looking into a pair of sea specs with the prescription lenses - if I don't recognize you in the water that's because I can only see shapes LOL. I get women's rash guards from Land's End - spf 50 and it seems to last well.
