announcement at Surfer.  It's their main story, of course.

Wow, in all the news of the world these days that really saddens me. My brother and I read it since the day it started. RIP and aloha John

Drew Kampion did a great job with that short obit.  It says a lot.

The New York Times has a very competent obit.  They talked to Kampion and Sam George, and had taken an interest in Severson in recent years.  I didn't see anything at West Coast papers.  I would expect Bruce Jenkins at the SF Chronicle/sfgate to have something.

The SF Chronicle reprinted the NYT obit.  Don't see anything at other West Coast papers.

I remember vividly awaiting each issue of Surfer. At the time, it was our only connection with the larger surf world. We would sit cross-legged on the terrazo floors of our bedrooms, each of us craning our necks to see the next page. We were just amazed at the waves, surfers, and locales in each issue.

Decades later, with gray starting to show in my hair, I finally got to see in person some of the spots we fantasized about. It was with that same 12 year old stoke that we travelled and surfed strange lands, customs, languages and cultures.

So, Mr. Severson, I am grateful for your all of your endeavors that led to my lifetime of stoke.

Me and a friend went up to St Augustine for a week surfing back in high school. Surfed blow hole and camped on the beach. Saw John Seversons Pacific Vibrations at the drive in up there. That was memorable.

"John Severson's SURF" edited and designed by Nathan Howe with contributions by Gerry Lopez and Drew Kampion, 2014, is a worthy addition to any bookshelf.

LA Times has a story, not exactly an obit, today.  Nice job, nothing much to add to previous tributes.  His paintings did sell at good prices.
