Style is what you make it!

When Dick opened his SatBch surfshop in 1964 I was 12 years old. I already had my first board, a Surfboards Atlantic popout. My surf buddies and I all had the surf fever.

Dick was the oldest guy we ever met or saw in person that surfed. I mean he was ancient!

He was 26.

Where was the surf shop in Satellite?

A little south of the Jackson/A1A intersection. Now there is a real estate office and a Thai place next door.

It was in the same building where Ricky Carroll's shop was. It was the north west corner of the building. It probably wasn't any bigger than 20' by 20'.

There was a girl's surf shop in the exact spot a few years ago.

Shagg would make custom lined corduroy baggies on a sewing machine in the shop. Retail price $8.00.

I was at a party with my brother and my dad in crystal lakes where we lived when I was about 9 or 10. Dick was there and we had a chat about surfing. he offered to take us back to his house and give us a surf history lesson, we accepted. He showed us his shaping room and shed full of old boards on which he and the likes of kelly, todd holland and others surfed on. He also gave us a tour of his house and had some pretty awesome stories, showing us trophies of past east coast surfing championships and contests he won. hard to remember every detail but it was a huge inspirational moment for me at the time as i was a grom just trying to rip and be like my heroes. RIP, thank you for your contribution to surfing as a whole and to melbourne beach

i think slater forgot to mention him in his post about surfing for Catr back in the day, if you were on the team you would be upset too, I know I would be. Did you guys get along back when you and KS were teammates?

I just read "At the Helm with Dick Catri" in the link above and learned more about him than I ever knew. I first met him in '79, and knew he was well connected in the surfing world, but not all those subtle nuiances that led to all that he became and meant to the surfing world.

A huge loss, RIP Mr. Catri.
