I hear you can use rice paper for this purpose. If so, Amazon has it cheap.

Are you talking about 'stickers' for after the fact or 'lams' for putting under the fiberglass? I do not have any experience making stickers.

For lams is is rice (it's really mulberry) paper 16-32 grams per square meter. Sometime if you just say rice paper you get steered towards edible paper for cooking.

Some of the surfboard supply places (Foamez, Greenlight) have it in 8.5 x 11" sheets. It's nice paper but cost more per unit for the small size and amount.

I get mine at an art supply store in a large sheet and cut it down to go through a printer. Costs about 1/3 as much and no shipping.

I also got some from a buddy in Hawaii. Paper is 9 x 13" and the package is in Chinese or Japanese so I cannot make heads or tails of it but it's a little heavier maybe 24 or 28 grams per square meter so it's a little easier to handle than the 16 gram paper I get locally.

If you run it through a printer, it helps to have a piece of regular paper taped behind it for feeding it through and catching bleed.

I don't buy from here but the site has good info:

Acrylics work as long as you don't put down too much at one time. The thin paper does not like being overloaded with moisture, it gets wrinkled and stuff.

Normally I am either laser printing black on it or silk screening it with water based inks or acrylic paints. I have a friend trying some Posca pens on some 30 gram paper.

If the pic comes through it will show some lams on 16 gram paper under glass and epoxy. The 'brand' names are laser printed and the bigger ones are silkscreened through old t-shirt screens with acrylic paint.

I've used the lighter artist grade rice paper from Loew Cornell Because my wife has a roll for her artwork purposes); taped down on a letter sized sheet of regular "printer" paper and printed on my semi-pro Epson R1900 ink jet. Works OK, but the color/ink saturation is not as "dense" as I'd like. Probably much better to buy the heavier grade paper and have it laser printed. See my ink jet lams below.

I have family in Florida that I come to see...and then I head for the coast to go play in the water.

If you strike out PM me your address and I can send you a piece of each.

Sounds good Eggs.

DP, I hear you on wanting more 'pop' from the inkjet prints. Your lams are really nice and the translucent colors work great with the halos.

Wedgefield, I tried the alcohol based markers from Michaels with a mandala from hellokids.com on the 30 GSM paper that was sent to me from Hawaii.

The alcohol markers did well not wrinkling the paper but some of the colors were not opaque. I laser printed the design and colored on the back, with the hopes that the black lines would define the edges. The metallic colors need to used 'first surface' to appear shiny.

I am going to attach a pic of that and another of a 3-color screen on 30 GSM next to a single acrylic paint screen print on 16 GSM. All of these are on an old plywood skateboard my kids made years ago. I decided to true up the outline and add some glass so I could enjoy riding it too.
