What's the surf like there?
Got a possible good gig in Newport News. ------------------------- "The truth is incontrovertible. malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is." -Sir Winston Churchill |

No first-hand knowledge here, but from what I've "heard", the surf is not very special. That said, the Outer Banks of North Carolina are pretty close. Otherwise, expect to upgrade your wetsuits to some new thicker models due the much colder water and extended "wetsuit" season. Good luck! ------------------------- Surfing is my passion...obsesssion... addiction! Can't imagine life without it! |

^ spot on but note while it's cold it's not freezing like NJ or New England...rare to have snowpack
I've only been there few times but overall people seemed very nice kinda relaxed laid back. So id say IMHO area overall is a decent place to live, pretty steady economy with all local military & Virginia has a solid state economy due to lots employment northern VA / DC suburbs. Yet local area there is not really overdevloped. Also close enough to bigger cities like NYC & DC for weekend trips etc but you're not living in the metropolis... also doable 1 day drive back here to FLa! ------------------------- get up early and go surf - it'll make that hangover go away and/or make the workday more tolerable :) |

You'll be going to the outer banks if you want to surf anything other than a longboard. If you're planning on living in VB and driving to work every day you will have to take the tunnel (s) ? and traffic is terrible - and it's already 45 minutes to get from the beach to n.news. I wouldn't live in N.News- very very rough, ugly city. Lots of project housing, industrial businesses, shipbuilding- just do a google image search for "Newport news" and you'll see..

Well I pretty much just longboard anyway.
I looked at real estate, looks cheaper than Brevard. I'm pretty skeptical about it though. Kinda settled here.. and whenever I see a pay rate that's that high, like almost double what I could get here, I gotta ask why? But I'll still check it out some more. ------------------------- "The truth is incontrovertible. malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is." -Sir Winston Churchill |

If "rare to have snowpack" isn't a warning sign not to go then I don't know what is. LOL. Good luck finding a job.

J20 is pretty much on it. I lived in Norfolk, went to school at ODU. VA beach surf is weak and fickle, like Florida, but even worse. Can be crowded, limits on where / when you can surf, beach parking is bad. On the other hand, get a place down on the outer banks and exit every weekend. Not too bad. That's what we did. Other than that, VA is beautiful and the Chesapeake Bay is great. My 2 cents.

I grew up surfing there. It can get good...but it is very rare. I like the north end best for surf. Occasionally Sandbridge, 10 minutes south, will have it a bit better. Be ready to trek to the outer banks. |

Yea, I already think I'm gonna pass on this.
I have a decent paying gig now, but it's turned me into an O-town kook, I only get back to the beach on the weekends. It sucked to hear about this weeks swell and be unable to get any. The offered rate was real good, but I'm making enough now. Thanks everyone. ------------------------- "The truth is incontrovertible. malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is." -Sir Winston Churchill |

I grew up in Norfolk and Virginia Beach. Best thing I ever did was leave and go to grad school in Florida. I went back for a year after finishing up and I quickly remembered why I hated it so much. Too many reasons to list! Great decision passing on the job offer. You probably get more surf living in Orlando than you would in Newport News!

Plenty of local job openings with your skill set here in town. Complete changes from just a few yrs back. |

I have a client in V.Beach, surfs Rudy Inlet almost daily, not Sebastian Inlet, but a really nice peak next to the jetty, I wish it was in my back yard |

grew up in VB in the 80s-early 90's. was not bad until the greek fest riots and then the whole scene changed. craoatan or 1st st always had something to ride. Pendelton for great rights on a south swell. 42st - 70th for NE swells. Before the outerbanks exploded with development, someone came up with the dumbass OBX abbreviation, and 158 became a tourist strip mall nightmare you could make it to kittyhawk in 45 minutes and Rodanthe in less than 1 1/2 hrs. put 103,00 miles on my car in 4 years driving back and forth. Living in NPN you could surf Buckroe Bch, gets very good on a certain wind. Glad I left in mid 90's but no regrets about living there. Only regret not living there now is not being as close to outer banks.

" put 103,00 miles on my car in 4 years driving back and forth " lol, I think I wore mine out Right at 75 miles from my house near ODU to Kittyhawk pier. I could drive it in my sleep (and probably did a few times).

Newport News, Norfolk, VB is basically a Navy town. Alot of active duty and retired. When the carriers are in town traffic can get bad during rush hour. We lived in VB for about 18 months before being assigned to Florida. I surfed 1st street Jetty alot (get there early for decent parking) and had some decent sessions. Just check the cams before you paddle out. If you're a new guy, the locals might get on you a bit, but generally pretty cool vibes in the water, especially when they see you shred they'll just turn the other way. BTW, the bigger the LB the better as you can take off really early off the Jetty and catch long rights. Edited: 03/23/2017 at 03:00 PM by GretschSrfr |

I had a good time and enjoyed Dam Neck, Sandbridge, and Virginia Beach and the surf.
Lived there almost 2yrs. It wasn't crowded and a nice town... ... but that was a while ago. Ohh wait, that was a loooong while ago. 1970 ------------------------- Puerto Rico 11 - 24 - 2013 |
