Would you go on a surf trip to hawaii when you are currently having minor shoulder and back pains/problems that mostly is exasperated by paddling?

You say "surf trip"

I would go and try and enjoy the millions of other things you could do other than surf. Or maybe surf but not as much as a "surf" trip.

No, go on Dr. Phil instead, and tell him that you are also brain dead. Don't have kids.

I wouldn't. Unless you have other hobbies like surf photography!

I've been having shoulder and lower back problems for 20 years.......

I go to the North Shore every other winter (although last winter was the knockout blow to my labrum)

I recently went on a surf trip with the family and had some major pain right before we left that caused me to be unable to surf for most of the trip. It actually was a blessing in disguise, or at least I made the most of it, because I was able to enjoy a lot of non-surf activities and touring with the family without feeling like I was 'missing surf' and getting aggro about it.

Hawaii is a big place. If you want to longboard Oahu's South Shore on an average to small day it might work out. But, for example, if you want to surf the North Shore on a challenging day I think you want to be in top shape or you could get in trouble. There is a range in between and you have to use your own judgement based on your definition of surf trip.

I have gone with injuries and have continued to surf on trips after I have suffered injuries (including after an unfortunate run-in with a reef that cut me up pretty good). Depends on how bad the injuries are. If I can surf here, then I will go there. If I couldn't surf here, then I wouldn't go.
