I get a feeling Delta's doing a lot of overbooking.  I'm at Atlanta airport where around 4 pm, they wanted several volunteers to put off travel to SAN Diego until tomorrow, going via Seattle.  Huge pain in the neck, but they were offering $1,000.  I'm coming back from a trip where I accepted an initial offer of $600 for a less drastic change.  The desk people were desperate for more, and upped the offer to $1,000, including those who'd already signed on.  That's in credits toward Delta fares, good for one year.

On an airline like Delta, people seem unwilling to change plans, so I'm not so worried about attracting competitors.

+ for Delta, they serve Melbourne Airport.

- they aren't great for some places.

But figuring out another trip or two is a good problem.

Used to fly out of MLB to SNA on Delta frequently. The one early Monday flight out to ATL was usually a sure bet for a $400 bump. Not a problem on my end because I really did not "have to be anywhere" until Tuesday morning. And even if I had a Monday afternoon meeting (California time), I always had plenty of time with the "next" flight..

They are offering 1,000 Delta dollars because if they can't find volunteers and have to bump passengers involuntarily they are required by the FAA to pay cash.  And that spends much easier than delta dollars and costs them more.

Delta has hits and misses with me.  Hits:  In mid 90's coming back from an overseas assignment with my wife and then 18 month old - the stewardesses placed their coats on the floor of the galley to let my son crawl around and not get dirty.  Misses:  Just about any flight I make between Atlanta and DC.

I was travelling from Boston last week on United.  Before I got to the airport, I received a text for each of my two flights they had been delayed.  Then I arrived at the airport and the first flight was overbooked.  They subsequently cancelled my 2nd flight.  I boarded, got stuck briefly in Newark, and ended up in Chicago at midnight before getting a flight out at 7am the following day.  They gave me $30 in food/booze coupons for my troubles.  I had primo Starbucks breakfast and snacks for the flight.

Now to figure out where to go with the Delta credit.  The $1000 can be split among more than one flight, gotta be spent by October.

When I was in my twenties, single, and had more free time on my hands. I would ask to get on the bump list every time I was on my way home. One trip I received five free round trip vouchers. Took me two day and one free hotel stay to get home. I thought it was worth it.

This literally happened on my last flight:

Passenger: I'd like to volunteer.
Delta Agent: For what?
Passenger: To get money for giving up my seat
DA: We don't need volunteers for this flight
Passenger: But I still want to volunteer
DA: Ok, you're volunteered (not taking any action or their info)
DA: Next.

$1,000 and how much is the board fee? I have accumulated over 200K miles on Delta and because of the board fees, I have a hard time using them when it comes to surf travel. If I could get a board shape that I like scanned into a computer and have the shape spit out for me when I get there, that would be pretty awesome, but alas... Because of the nature of my work, I don't know where I'll be a few months out, so I just buy last minute tickets to go visit family, etc, with usually not too much of a penalty.

Baggage has become so limited, I coughed up the money for lighter-weight bags (Osprey, apparently a serious hiking backpack maker).  Still can't believe the stuff people try to load overhead.
