Any idea what the brown crud was this weekend in the water? It was everywhere from Cocoa to Mel Beach. Did not seem like red tide. And there was a lot of water moving around so probably not an algae like in the river.

I'd like to see Surfrider or someone monitoring this.  This instance may be from Matthew, but its been in the water alot this summer.  Particulalry by storm drain runouts (Watson).  And with the million plus gallon of sewage breach recently reported, it makes you question it......

It's seawater not crystal clear tap water. I've seen that at times forever. It was here and there with all the turbulence. But don't drink it intentionally.

algae growth getting scraped off the hard pack sand bottom. Happens when we go a long time without a strong long period swell.

This years foam is more noxious than in years past. I landed in and accidentally swallowed some at Flagler pier in early sept.  Most disgusting, acrid, chemicle taste ever! And that baby shit yellow color. I mean wtf. Two days later I had strep throat. I can't remember ever having that. I've tried to only surf when and where the water is clean. But now my whole surf zone flaglusia area is wall to wall with this shit.

I have only seen this stuff when the surf gets big and choppy especially during the winter months when we get several days of strong NE winds.

I heard it's from the sargassum seaweeds decomposing. Notice how there isn't as much gunk on the shore or water anymore?

Is this why surfing, even in the crud, makes me feel better?

st lucie? perhaps.

You forgot to add  THIS to the mix:

"The EPA estimates that single 3,000-person cruise ship pumps 150,000 gallons of sewage—about 10 backyard swimming pools’ worth—into the ocean per week."

THEN -

STIR  (with hurricane force)  Result = Doo Doo brown AND  floater convention at a beach near you.

Last digits I've got is that Hollywood, Broward and Miami-Dade outfalls

discharge 71billion gallons of treated sewage to the ocean annually.

That's 71,000,000,000 gallons, just "upstream" of us...

Not defending cruise ships, just adding a little perspective.
