Early right after dawn we walked up on paramedics performing CPR on a surfer on the beach. It didn't look good. I couldn't recognize the guy too well as paramedics were all surrounding him. Any one know any information? I hope he made it but it didn't look good. Hope he did.

He didn't make it, but has not been ID'd at this time. I would imagine they're waiting to notify his family.

He went in the midst of doing what he probaly loved , in beautiful surroundings, hopefully it was quick and somewhat painless, RIP surfing brethren ,prayers out to his family.

I would say he was around 55 yrs old. Was wearing white trunks. So sad. Im wondering if someone is still waiting for him to come home. Anyone have a good way to water rescue a downed surfer in order to get him to shore quickly? Would be good to share to help prevent tragedies like this. At least he died doing what he loved. RIP

So sad to hear. I would expect SBPD to maybe check Publix security cams in case he was parked there, and they can match him to a car that's still there.

Surfer Magazine had a rescue article about 15 years ago. Part of what I remember was a can-opener type of move to get the victim on a board. Sort of a leverage move that involved getting a board partly under him, then flipping the board over, where you could at least try to clear lungs in calm water.

Seems like the fastest way in is a tandem belly ride through whitewater.

I would think attaching a leash from someone's board to the victim's leg is a good idea. If he gets separated again in the impact zone, it helps find him, and maybe pushes him to shore as well. (Assuming he's not already connected to a leash.)

Another thread with CPR links and water rescue tips would be an honorable gesture in his memory.

google search turned up a lot on water rescue. leash idea is great. i have heard of a few people getting the pt. ripped from their grip. Everyone should take a FA/CPR class. R.I.P and the family will be in our thoughts.

A neighbor in Satellite Beach just told me about this, Monday afternoon. Barry Rubel was his name, lived two doors down from me. I am distraught right now, but wanted to share what I know with our surfing community, although I haven’t posted in forever. His wife told me a witness saw him ride a wave this early morning, grab his chest and roll off his board. I guess a few surfers paddled over and helped him to shore. They CPR’d but never got a pulse, neither did ambulance during the 20 minute ride to the hospital. Some folks recognized him and his car, whereby they found out his address to notify his wife.

I’ve only been in this neighborhood for two years, but Barry was always out walking his two dogs in the evenings after work, always willing to chat. The most approachable mellow dude, it was a joy to share the conversations we did. Petty stuff: boat problems, good surf, bad surf, engineering life, etc. He would always greet with a smile and quiet “Hello”. He was super fit, surfed every chance he had. He’d paddle almost every Saturday at Hightower just to get exercise. I’d see him unloading in the morning with his surfboard, tell him I thought it was flat, his response: “It is, but it was a nice morning to stretch out my arms.” He was more active in his 50’s than I am in my 30’s, and definitely was a good dude. Another of our brothers gone too soon.

The family is not sure of funeral arrangements yet, but I told them I would help facilitate a paddle-out for him once they know what their schedule is. We’ll probably do it at Hightower Park in Satellite Beach, this weekend, September  10 or 11. I will post here once I know the details. I do not know how big his surf network was, so if you wanted to send him off properly, you’d be welcome to attend.

I don’t know what it’s like to die, but I imagine I’d want to go out like that.

I had to save my best friend many years ago. If I had not taken water rescue training in summer camp, he would have drowned. I highly recommend everyone take some sort of water rescue/CPR training if you're going to be out in the waters.
My condolences to the family and friends of the deceased surfer, and I hope they I.D. him real soon.

You flip your board upside down, grab the victims arm pinning it against the board and flip the board upright towards you. This leverages the victim onto the board sideways after which you can position them so you can paddle them to shore.
