Looking for some ideas on a wax that will bump up well. I'm on my last little nub of my mighty mounds stash. It beads up incredibly well and I haven't been able to find anything even close. Any suggestions? Sticky bumps has always been my 2nd choice but if I can find something else that beads up like mighty mounds I would be stoked.

I've tried them all (almost) and I think Sticky Bumps Tour formula works the best. Put down a nice Sticky Bumps base coat, then the Tour wax on top is the right amount of stickyness and the base coat sets up great bumps. My 2 cents.

For me the key to good bumps is to bring the board into the AC and let it cool off for a while and apply wax in the cool house.

Yeah I normally do that or cool the wax in the fridge first. I put some new stuff on recently and it just smears. Once you get the bumps established it doesn't matter what you put on after. I will give the sticky bumps base coat a try. Thanks

If it's a new stick, start with some basecoat...... otherwise I just use whatever old nasty stuff is laying in the bed of my truck

Sticky Bumps is my favorite for short boards. I use the cold water all year round when I can get it. Or I'll put tropical/warm on in the summer if that is all I have. It works good on Long boards but I also like the old Sex Wax on long boards as it does form bumps a bit better I find.

Can't stand slimy wax that just smears under your foot. Guess it's a personal preference.

Not sure if you guys have ever used the Grater Grip, but it's a good option if you are looking to get some good bumps on your board. I used it before going to Puerto Rico earlier this year. I was impressed with the bumps it creates.

I put down a light base coast then used the Grater Grip. Pushed it down alittle then just went surfing.

I picked up one of those graters at the RC Rohman benefit, because the dude selling them was donating the entire cost.
It does work, if the wax is hard enough to grate.

Last time I was out in California, went to a surf get together in Encinitis and a guy was selling these vinyl deck overlays that had patterns on them that would cause the wax to bump up when applied. Seemed to work from what I could see. I have the guy's card somewhere and will try to find it if anyone is interested. Think they were out of San Clemente.

But, yeah, Mighty Mounds was the best. Can't understand why they stopped making it.

For the Waxtrak, how do you get the dirty wax off? Throw out the whole pad and buy a new one?

Thanks for that little flash from Memory Road you guys. Can't remember when I last bought one of those boxes of Gulf Wax. Looks pretty much like I remember it from 1967.

Hey, just for fun ... I remember when Mike Doyle and some other guys first came out with Waxmate. I think their company was called Surf Research. Came in square kinda purple bars and cost 25 cents. I've still got one of the little blue labels from one of those bars around here somewhere.Waxmate smelled good too, which was new.

There might have been other waxes that came out during this time, but one I remember very well: Frog Wax. Mike Margolis at the old Oceanside Surf Shop in Cocoa Beach loaded me up with more Frog Wax than I could carry when I bought a new Oceanside Instrument in early 1970. This stuff was orange and had an orange smell. Not bad wax either, for the day.

Sometime around this period there was an attempt by some guys to come up with a wax that REALLY accomplished the job of keeping you on your board. If memory serves, they called this stuff Tack Wax, and it came in like a paper tub. Don't remember if it smelled or not, but it was pretty tacky.

After that, Zog's Sex Wax seemed to just dominate for a long time in the wax department. Sex Wax was "it" for decades. Some guys still love it, but I've got to admit that (at least in my opinion) Sticky Bumps outdoes it.

Funny, how the smells of some of these waxes can bring back great surfing memories. Picked up some 99 cent Glade air freshener not long ago from Wal-Mart, and the first time I sprayed the stuff it smelled almost EXACTLY like the old Cocoanut flavor they used in Sex Wax. Now, how'd they do that? - haha!

I'm old school for waxing. I use gulf wax as a base coat. I melt the gulf wax using a little stereo setup and an old cook pot and apply to the board use a paint brush.
After the base coat is dry (a couple of minute), I then add the top coat - Sex Wax, Sticky Bumps or any other brand like normal - rub it on. Oh, I tape off the area
I apply the hot wax using painter's tape. This makes a much cleaner look.

With gulf wax though, the sun will cause this wax to melt off easily if left in the sun and not in the water. You can use a base coat Sex Wax or another brand to melt and apply also. That works just
as good and is not affected by the sun as quickly for melting.

My 2 cents in board waxing.
