I'm seeing fares at American Airlines from $700 to $750 in September-October.  Some days, it's over $2000.  Melbourne-Charlotte-Paris.

There seems to have been a spate of low fares to Europe in the wake of the British mess.  Probably best to search fast.  For Melbourne, Google was hopeless; Kayak might be better.  My impression is that sometimes, but not always, a low American or Delta fare from Orlando will be matched for Melbourne.  I've got a trip from Melbourne in October.

I'm also seeing a lot cheaper flights to areas outside of London (it's been this way since the first of the year). We were planning to fly into Dublin or Budapest, and then take a hop flight over - would have saved at least 200 a ticket when we checked (even with the extra flight figured in). Fares are going down, now, too. We are sending the girl child over to London this week and ended up paying something like $800 for tickets direct to Gatwick. Sad about the vote (still up in the air) but good exchange rate, at least, for now. Go surf Cornwall - I've heard it's good there . Everywhere I saw was flat flat flat when I was there, though.

Google indicates some extreme low fares around Aug. 30.  $530 on offer by American to Shannon Aug 29-Sept 5.  I doubt that's real, but there's lots of other good-looking prices.

Cornwall's a substantial distance from London.  I guess you can get there by train or bus.  West coast of Ireland is evidently magnificent, and the locals apparently happier than in Cornwall, which has serious poverty problems.

I have no idea what's in Brittany.  Getting from Paris to Biarritz or Anglet seems to be an 8 hr drive or short, expensive flight.

Just take the TGV from Paris to Biarritz. Fast and relatively cheap. I never rent a car in Europe anymore. Just take trains.

I don't think you can take the train all the way to the end of Cornwall as it ends inland near main towns, so most likley have to take the car but it is beautiful there and well worth it - as is Ireland - just remember driving is quite different over there, much slower probbaly 6-7 hours from Londontowne eventhough only couple hundred miles... Also, most of the swells are winter time

BTW keep in mind our dollar just got stronger over there so it's a good deal for us right now. I was just over there during the vote and compared my purcases on credit card before / after the vote and it was like 20% cheaper after the pound exchange rate tanked Thursday. Anyways if any of y'all been dreaming thinking about maybe doing that Euro trip I say go for it great time to go right now!!!  IMHO just pay for Virgin Atlantic MCO / LGW then just hop on train from airport right into London Victoria to enjoy olde Londontowne  only downside is you may never want to fly on any american airline ever again LOL

get up early and go surf - it'll make that hangover go away and/or make the workday more tolerable :)

Surferclimber, have a great trip.  I haven't been to London for a long time.  Last stay was at the Premier Inn London Southwark, quick walk from London Bridge station, train from Gatwick.  I think that was the trip where I dropped the bags at the hotel, walked over to the National Theatre, and went to the matinee.  Front row seat at a nearly five hour epic featuring Helen Mirren.

Looks like Premier Inn is affordable with the low pound!  And it looks like you can get from London Paddington station (as in the bear) to Newquay, 11:35 to 4:47.

Shannon looks ideal for the Irish west coast, just rent a car.  I managed 2 weeks in New Zealand without killing anyone, so presumably can do lefty driving in rural settings.

I'm busy this fall through early January.

Surferclimber, I believe you can take the train and then a bus to get to Cornwall (it IS a fair journey but I really love the British rail system in all it's funky strike and time-addled glory . I do NOT like to drive there - the combination of the wrong side, crazy drivers, and roundies is like to make me mad. Daughter is over there now, and reaping the benefits of the pound, but it's bad news overall for us (my partner is British and still a citizen). For surf, though, I would go to France - the water is a tad bit chilly there.

Train from Paddington, then train or local bus to the likes of Newquay.  Around 4-5 hours.

Roundabouts are easy.  You only have to look in one direction.  It's the rural right/left turns that mess you up.  And exiting gas stations.

Have fun.  I did a similar trip to Taipei and had a great time.
