OK. I'm a short boarder. I get on a 9'4" Stewart Hydrohull and I ride it like a short board. This summer I am determined to learn how to ride it like it should be surfed. I watch the guys flittering up and down the deck to turn and plane, hanging toes on the nose with envy. I want to join the club.

How do I break through to the other side??

Slow down, to feel the groove, dont rush on a LB. Many of the best long-boarders use subtle ankle, and hip adjustments vs large muscle movements.
Also practice cross stepping anywhere, anytime.....on a carpet, parking curb, or best Indo board/skateboard.

Lastly watch videos of Justin Quintal and Tommy Whitt!

I heard somebody once say "shortboarding is like checkers and longboarding is like chess." You kinda want to plan it out a little more. Other than that try to focus on the glide and staying in the pocket before you start cross stepping.

One fin& heavy.  Get in early, do a fade turn.  Set up trim or cross step and Glide

I've been trying to learn cross stepping for years. YEARS. It seems like every time I'm on the board, in the pocket with a nice high line. I think. Step up to the nose! but I just can't get my feet to do it, and I end up doing the dorky foot shuffle.

Haha I am still quite shameful at cross stepping too

Cross stepping gracefully is sooooo overdone.

I prefer waddling like a duck.

Try that instead...

Good stuff. Taking in the slow and easy advice and watched the videos. Thanks!

So a fade turn is what?

I'll hoping to do this on a 9'4" Stewart Hydrohull borrowed from my son. Or do I need to start with something bigger??

Fade is just a slow and deliberate left-go-right (or right-go-left). Take off at angle opposite the direction you intend to go and swing the board around in a big ol' bottom turn to start the wave.

Cross-stepping to the nose is easy. It's the cross-stepping back that takes some skill.

I'm surprised Mr. James MacLaren's longboarding videos haven't surfaced yet (The Physics of Noseriding pt1/4) ...

this dude is local and definitely has knowledge to offer

edit: Wingnut's art of longboarding has already been linked

Thank you Mike Daniel for explaining the fade turn

When I started, I did it by running up and right off the nose. Now I do it perfect every time.

Take the fin off and put it in the lawn .Practice getting up and count how many steps it takes to hang five . Count how many steps it takes to hang ten . I don't cross step I walk the tight rope " that's what I call it ". Practice it over and over then take that to the water . Ride it as much as you can this summer and you will get there by summers end !!!! Look at your feet when you are on the nose and try not to shuffle step . I surf short boards more than not and love it .But longboarding on the right days is amazing when you learn how to properly ride one..... good luck my friend !

Thanks for all the support guys.

Right now the 9'4 Stewart Hydrohull has a tri fin set up and the center fin is really too small (based on the physics of Longboarding by Mr. Maclaren). So I'm planning on getting a longboarding fin. Any suggestions Dingpatch? I'm 145 lbs.
