As we all know Kelly is not of this earth. The rest of us wish we could surf as good as he does on his worst day.

PSE I concede that you surf your O'Hare well. Just think of how much fun you would have on a longboard ;-)

I am not in a state of denial. I simply don't like riding longboards. Volume is key in small gutless surf. I can ride just about anything on my 5'6" couch potato.

My point when I posted is that a longboard should be part of any Florida surfer's quiver. Never mind that one is still capable of riding a shortboard. A LB rounds out and expands a surfer's style and skill. Plus it means more waves and longer rides on the small summer days we are coming upon. You see it every small swell, the shortboarders are on the inside shorebreak trying mightily to find a workable section before the inevitable crumbly closeout while the longboarders are able get in early and make the most of what waves there are. When it gets over waist high shortboards make sense for those that like them. Less than that is fun ratio goes way down.

Stay on your shortboards...
.... we have enough longboards in the water now 9' Walden Mega Magic which floats, paddles and performs better than any of my 10 footers. Have ridden an 8' Mega and it worked... ... and I'm really just an old longboarder. ------------------------- Puerto Rico 11 - 24 - 2013 |

Lovin all the responses. I've been thinking of a thick, fat shortboard for the smaller days. Maybe a 6'10" hypto krypto? Or something local similar to that. I love longboarding, but find it hard thinking of giving up (trying to ) bury a rail in a hard cutback. Please, keep the comments coming...although a 9'0" hp longboard has a nice ring to it too. |

Surfing experience along with height and weight would help.

It's my senior project from high school at UHS back in 01. I leant the board out to my then girlfriend who leant it to someone else and they proceeded to take it out into a massive hurricane swell and beat the living crap out of it. It's originally a 7'10 turbohog that robert strickland helped me shape, and having it back in the water is an amazing feeling. |

If you intend to use a short board for summer waves May I suggest a modren Fish style board. For float go around 6'8" for a oh my god this is insane ride go shorter. Some like atreditional keel Fish others a quad set up But I think get the best of Both with a twinzer set up fast loose and drive. |

PSE, If I thought could pull off "twirly-whirly fairy princess prancing" on a wave I would.
I'm not big (165), but I mostly ride long boards because it's easier. As I am just starting to approach my middle years now (60 this year) I'm finding 7'ish funshapes and hybrids to be more fun to ride than logs, and easier to carry down the beach. You don't need a real long board to surf in Florida, just enough foam. ------------------------- "The truth is incontrovertible. malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is." -Sir Winston Churchill |

I was wondering what you other bigger guys ride when the waves are smaller? I'm 6'3"/245 lbs. and ride my 6'8" shortboard/rocket fish normally, but not sure what to try during the summer. Not sure if I should go more high performance longboard, or a hypto krypto type board?? I'm getting a bit older now (almost 40), and not sure if I should start the switch to a lb or not in small waves. What works for you guys? Go see Keith Sims, 321 Surfboards. Go custom... |

6'3x185x35yrs. My 5'10 Neckbeard will work down to knee high. I had a 9'2 log for a few summers that I got super cheap from a co worker. I ended up chopping it into a 5'9 as I'm not much of a longboarder. Nothing against them I just grew up surfing shortboards. I am looking to grab anohter for summer paddles to keep shoulders in shape. Thinking of one of those Catchsurf longboards so i can paddle my daughters int some waves.
