I was wondering what you other bigger guys ride when the waves are smaller? I'm 6'3"/245 lbs. and ride my 6'8" shortboard/rocket fish normally, but not sure what to try during the summer. Not sure if I should go more high performance longboard, or a hypto krypto type board?? I'm getting a bit older now (almost 40), and not sure if I should start the switch to a lb or not in small waves. What works for you guys?

Well, I've been fully converted to "longboard" for some years now. Honestly, I'm 64, 5'10"/200lbs, and well past my "ripper" stage. I'm fully settled in on a 10'0" right now, but in the past my quiver was 8'2", 9'2", 9'6" and 10'0". Sure, a 10'0" becomes "problematic" when the surf gets head+, but that is where my 8'2" shorty came in. Sure, during summer here we will have the occasional tropical storm swell. But, FOR THE MOST PART, it is the summer doldrums for sure. You, at 6'3"/245lbs must be really flailing trying to catch the knee high summer swells on a 6'8". You would probably feel comfortable on a performance type 9'6".

This kind of topic comes up a lot here. Simple summer question: do you want to actually surf, or do you only want to "perform"?

larenyon, time to get on (long)board with something 9 foot and over. So many to choose from, I'm 6' and 200# and 53y/o and my 9' SLX Walden works nice for me, so might want to go a little bigger .There are lots of times I wish I had a 9'6" or 10'

I'm <30yo and I ride an 8ft single fin unless its waist-chest with punch. 

No shame in the mo-foam-game.

6'4 and 190, I will be 33 at the end of the month.

I have a 5'3 garage made simms that I hacke dout of an old 7'10 fun shape. the boards 19 3/4 by 22 by 19 3/4 with wooden keel fins. It paddles like a long board and plows through the flats but you can really turn it on a dime.

plus when it glassy and about 2-3 feet it absolutely comes to life.

Awww come on John, what about those of us that still suffer mental anguish from the horrors of getting beat nearly to death by logs in our pre-teen years in the mid-60's and have no interest in twirly-whirly fairy princess prancing and posing post mid-life? 7' Pat O'Hare fun shape works just fine in micro summer surf, even for fat old guys. Denial is substituting board length for skill *Disclaimer; Just as I vowed not to surf Jetty Park before the age of 60 but was corrupted in my resolve by outside forces, I will vehemently foreswear this entire statement the day after I buy my first longboard.
