William Gray, the pioneer of long range hurricane activity prediction, died April 16, 2016 at the age of 86.

But not before predicting an average hurricane season for the Atlantic in 2016.

The Atlantic Basin hurricane season forecast http://hurricane.atmos.colostate.edu/Forecasts/  issued by Colorado State University’s William Gray and Phil Klotzbach predicts a near normal season. In the annual long-range hurricane forecast released April 14, Klotzbach and Gray expect 2016 will feature 12 total Atlantic tropical storms, including 5 hurricanes and 2 major (Cat. 3+) hurricanes. An average Atlantic Hurricane Season produces 12 total storms, including 6 hurricanes and 2 major hurricanes.

r.i.p. Doc G.

&...The odds of a major event happening in the Atlantic this year are virtually identical to the odds of a major event happening ten years ago or ten years in the future. On a long time scale, you can say that a major event is very likely to occur, but the day-to-day odds remain virtually unchanged. You can AVERAGE the time between events in a particular area, but there will ALWAYS be variation in the actual rates of occurrence.
