Great vid!! Wonderful to see someone willing to follow and expand on Greenough's outta the box thinking.

Cool video but I don't understand why he spray painted the board. If he knew how to replicate a complex board like that he surely could have done a red resin pigment.

I thought the same thing but then if you think about it, GG was kind of a backyard expeimenter rather than a high end board builder and maybe the rattle can job was a small homage to that shadetree style.

I guess but if I spent that much time replicating something cool like that I would pick a resin tint that would do it justice. I have only shaped a couple boards but I managed a resin tint on one and an acid splash / Mexican blanket on another both with epoxy. That guy could have done better, he clearly had the glassing skills.

Booooo!

Seeing a board shaped without seeing someone ride it is torture.

It looks like he is using UV cure resin and they are somewhat problematic to do tints with.

I asked him.  He said,

"I sprayed the gg board with auto eurathane and then wet sanded with 400.  Pretty classic Greenough finish, though his new ones are gel coated and wet sanded to 400.  I was in a hurry and it felt very George to go full function over form - guys that know George know that he never tinted resin because it changes the chemistry of the resin -- he's the Ultimate purist for strength and purity for his builds.  Always function over form, he's known for making any surface that comes in contact w the water flawless, and not give two shits about the quality of finish or look of the deck of the board."

We need some video of that board in use. I have never seen that shape, so my imagination is wondering how it rides.

That's awesome CERTON, from everything I have read about GG he was much more into experimenting with design and functioality as opposed to appearance, I mean who goes out ona  dang inflatable mat with flippers if they want to look cool?

On a semi related note, I just took delivery of a 7' "V Bowls" single fin from Mr. Lovelace.  Stoked to get it wet ASAP!

spray and wetsand 400 is my preference.  I thought I was just lazy.  where did I see these boards get ridden?  a video with Rastovich somewhere?

This board, not so much.

Define "bad" and "good" in this context, I'm interested.

Without the art of shaping and surfing, the science of it all loses its "edge".

Long live 100% handshaping and death to pop outs.

Thx for the link dingpatch.

"Bad" and "Good" are both subjective.  Bad to you might be good to me and vice versa right?  I experiment all the time with boards and conditions and I have a ball.

Agree, death to pop outs!  LOL!

I agree surfboard design preferences are subjective, however, design "qualities" can be objective, if they don't produce the results they desired results.

An example could be if a is design is supposed to go fast, but the design is not hydro-dynamically capable of producing speed on a wave, it could be a "bad" design.

Pop outs: I have enjoyed a pop out due to the economical advantages, it was a 7S round tail got off the rack at QF a few years ago for $250!!!

The rate at which I destroy boards, indiscriminate of the origin, negates most benefits of hand shape vs cost effectiveness of pop outs.

Even Merricks I believe are "popped" out, and hand finished....and they have the sickest rocker, and volume distribution IMO!

IMO ......

Good - it caught waves early and went down the line VERY fast.
Bad - still had most of the catching an edge/rail probs of boards late in the single fin era and only superior surfing talent kept it from spinning out during bottom turns on those bigger lefts.

Not long before G. Loehr moved to Az I ran into him at The Surf Station in St. Auggie. It is always fun to talk board design/construction with him and during our lil chat we were looking at a new "retro" single fin. Greg kinda shook his head and said ..."hell, they didn't really work back then and they don't work now!" That from a guy that surfed them as well as anyone ever did.
