Bad timing for me and my surf buddies this summer; we can't seem to get our schedules on the same page sooo...

I'm looking for a couple people who wanna go to Nica for ~7-9 days (+/-) and just get a condo on the beach and surf, eat, sleep, repeat. Maybe a couple boat trips if the swell is right.

I like to go thro 'Buzz' , comes out to about $50/night pp in a 3 BR condo right on the beach.

OR, if anybody already has a trip planned for July and needs another person - lmk.

Congrats on the degree. Mine, surprisingly, kept me employed.  And best wishes with the trip.  Right now, I can look out the window at a Nicaraguan rainforest monster bromeliad and an even bigger Costa Rica-Panama cycad.

I'm 'way too old, and traveled out for this year.  I think I'll have a beach bach booked at Piha sometime today.

Those are for the future.  NZ's equivalent to early December is a good time for Northland.  Also, the Auckland beaches have pretty good second-growth forests.  Here's the place from Google Street View.

It's a bit odd to look at Mt Taranaki, the volcano, on Google Maps and see the perfect circular shape of the park.

I wandered over to the beach today and got wet for the first time in 3 months.  The shoulder still needs lots of TLC.

Nice shots.  I once could see Mt Hood out the office window, if I put my nose to the glass.

Nica rain forest bromeliad.  Caribbean coast, presumably.

Nicaragua in Vero.  The slightly silvery leaves are Aechmea mariae-reginae and the palmy leaves to its right are a cycad, Zamia variegata, which is known in Belize and Guatemala, apparently not Nicaragua.  Also at far left, a big firebush, Hamelia patens.  It has a huge distribution from Florida to Argentina.

It's not a very practical surfing destination and the NY Times is subscription, but this travel story on the NW coast of Colombia is a good read.  A bit of it:

"The coast looked surreal in the mist as we motored south with three boards stacked in the bow of the launch. We passed little coastal towns strung out along the beaches - clusters of low houses with thatched palm roofs and a few canoes pulled up on the sand. Then a more austere coastline of wave-lashed rocks. Finally, we came to a wave that we didn't have to look for. It stood up tall, proud and cobalt blue and broke cleanly over a rock shelf perched beneath the verdant hills."

It's by Murray Carpenter, probably this one.

Hand-coloured lithograph by G.F. Angus, 1846.  Alexander Turnbull Library, Wellington.   "Seabirds possibly feeding on discarded offal or bait"

Back cover of "Te Matau a Maui:  Fish-hooks, Fishing and Fisheries in New Zealand"  Beautiful book, arrived today, so I've only drooled at the photos.  Would be of interest to anyone wanting insight into traditional fishing

Nicaragua almost got the original "Panama" canal, but its volcanoes scared would-be builders.

Looks like there's excellent air fares to Managua in July.
