2 14 year old boys left Jupiter inlet to go fishing on Friday afternoon and have not yet been found. Their boat was found yesterday about 65 miles off Daytona, the boat was capsized. I'm sure most of you have already seen the story but I didnt see it posted here. Praying f that they are found alive.

This is tragic, but one great thing is that former football legend Joe Namath (apparently their neighbor) is offering $100,000 reward for their return.

Makes you wonder how the boat flipped in such small seas, do the afternoon storms kick up that kind of turbulence out there?

It was a very nasty storm that came from land to sea quickly,
heard seas got big very quickly and wind gusts were over 50 knots.

What kind of parent lets a 14 year old go off shore alone? I don't see this ending well.
I've been off shore and had it go from near flat to 6 foot in a matter of minutes.
What kind of boat were they in?

Edit.. Just saw on the news they were in a 19 foot center console.
Expanding search area to Jacksonville.

I asked the same thing but heard they were not allowed to be offshore.  They were told not to leave the inlet and ventured out on their own.  Feel terrible for the families and props to Joe Namath for stepping up with a reward on their safe return.

Even old men get capsized by wild storms.
Going off shore is a risk for any age.

From the Washington Post:  " According to USA Today, Korniloff told reporters on Sunday that the boys were not allowed to take the boat offshore or to the Bahamas."

Use to work cases like this - sucks.  Hopefully they're found...boys are resilient.

Something tells me this isn't the first time these modern day Tom Sawyers have done this.

When I was their age we hung from 14 story cranes, swam way out in the ocean, swung from giant swings into alligator occupied retention ponds, the list goes on and on. It's part of growing up as boys in Florida.

They just ran into a freight train of a storm.

Listening to Joe Namath was heart wrenching.

My house was shaking friday afternoon/evening from that system that pushed off the coast. Then the entire knook between CFL/Carolinas was lit up with NE fetch over the weekend that pushed that little swell in. I can only imagine what the seas were doing way offshore in the Gulf Stream. I bet the survival instinct is strong for 2 14yo boys, but still....it's been a few days now and that's a big ocean.

Now is probably not the time to point out the decision of the parents to let these kids go offshore without adult supervision...that is an obvious mistake to most of us. I am sure the parents don't need that thrown back in their faces.

This is such a terrible story and I hope the outcome is positive

EPIRB ~ $500 yeti cooler ~$400, should of bought a cheaper cooler and splurged on the safety device. Very sad, hope they find them. In south Florida this is pretty common for kids this age to fish alone. I know I did it.

While you and I might not agree with the decision of the parents to let the kids take their boat offshore now is not the time for that discussion. The Coast Guard said that the boys could survive 4-5 days in the water. Lets hope today is the day that they are found.

Anyone who has grown up around the water esp inlets or ports have gone out where they shouldn't have, especially at 14yrs old. I remember my buddy & I taking his little Carolina Skiff out on a flat day and tried to make it to the shoals! A storm kicked up in the blink of an eye and we were very fortunate to be able to turn around and get back in shore. It's been a while now these kids are out there. I just hope there is a positive outcome from this.

You dont think the parents have thought about what they could have done differently? I'm sure they are racked with guilt that they let the boys go or that they didnt have an Epirb. The fact remains that the boys are still lost out at sea and they need all the help they can get to locate their kids.

I pray for these kids in what must be the most terrifying experience of their young lives. This is a forum for discussion however and I doubt anything we say here will be read by the parents and, if it is won't be anything they haven't heard or thought about themselves. But if there is one 14 year old reading these discussions or one parent in charge of young water man and they learn something that keeps them from getting into a similar situation, then maybe talking about mistakes made by both parents and the boys are not such a bad thing.

If they were such good watermen they should have known to stay with the boat. They'd probably be safe now. There is a good lesson that no matter how close land looks stay with the boat. You can't fight the gulf stream.

In the meantime lets do everything we can to help find them. Good job posting this thread PW.
