Fernando Pires, an unlikely Brazilian transplant to New York's Rockaways is a surfboard repairman and subject of a New York Times holiday weekend story. It's worth using up a limited free access, unless you really want to know about the Greek and Puerto Rican crises. Link. "Mr. Pires, who is divorced and has four children who live a block away with their mother, also works as a customer service agent at Kennedy International Airport. The job allows him to take inexpensive surf vacations. He said he grew up surfing in Rio de Janeiro and worked for a board maker there as a teenager before moving to New York City at age 20 to stay with relatives and learn English. His plan was to head to California for the surfing." At the New Yorker, "Rockaway Beach" by Eric Drooker. |
