It's not just pro surfers that are depressed it's hard when you have put surfing above everything and find yourself at the other end of your prime.  People have to have more in their life.  Family Friends and Something that makes you happy outside of the water.  DigPatch You seem to have a talent for crafting Fins and I'm sure other woodwork as well. I have lost over the years 3 really great surfer friends to suicide.   Depression kills

Sounds like he finally figured out he is a person rather than a self appointed badass, carrier of derision and hate, and hui vetted demi-god.

Perhaps a good start is to apologize to humanity and recognize what a dick he has been to people.

Good luck Sunny. Wish you well.

He never seemed like a happy guy.  Depression is when you focus on the problems instead of appreciating what you do have. Is that something people cant control or are they just so used to thinking like that?

and sometimes it is really just a chemical imbalance... I really think that regular exercise and a good diet can really be a huge benefit to those with depression, but there's no doubt that medication is needed in some chronic cases. Sunny seems to maintain good fitness, so my guess is that he really needs some meds.

Depression is common.  Excellent non-medical books are available.  Short one by the late William Styron, longer "Noonday Demon" by Andrew Solomon.  Astute psychiatrist Martin Seligman (Learned Optimism) thought depression was eminently treatable, compared to weight loss, which he thought nearly impossible.

If Garcia's being open about his problem, that's good.
