I'm considering getting a Weirdo Ripper for myself. I surf at the intermediate level, I'm older but in good shape and weigh 155lbs on good days. I usually ride a shortboard 5'11" with a volume around 30 L so I'm thinking about getting the 5'8" at 30.1L but they recommend I get a 5'6" 26.2 L version. I don't want to get something that won't give me float but don't want to get something that is hard to turn because I went to big.

Any feedback on the board for local waves and suggestions if I should go much lower in volume for this board?

IMO their board suggestions are on the low end...... I know I always add 5
+lbs and seems about right.

At 155 that is alot of foam, but if that's what you're comfortable with, roll with it.

those boards carry alot of foam through the nose, but out of all their short fatties, it seems the most functional / versatile to me

I'm 6-0 170, 40 and my "go-to" is around 29L for most of our junk.... just got a new 6-2 shorty around 28L (18 3/4 x 2 3/8)waiting to be ridden friday

I was looking at that same board Dane. Looks like a good versatile board.

Not sure what happened to my post. I have a weirdo and a disc. Both are great, neither do great in wind chop.

Buy it...

Got mine about a year ago and have said outloud countless times BEST BOARD EVER!

Surfed anything from knee high slop to just overhead without struggling to paddle and the boards performance just gets better as the waves get bigger. Only regret is that I should've got the 5 fin instead of a thruster so I could play around with fins.

I'm 5'9 160lbs and I went with the 5'8 model. I find the 30L to be perfect...awesome Florida board.

Any feedback on riding this as a 4 fin  vs. 3 fin thruster set up?

I'm 5'8 195-200lbs and ride the 5'7" x 19 3/8 x2 3/8 x 28.5L wierdo. I ride it as a thruster and love it. Paddles great, catches everything. It's exceptional in good waves. In crap waves the rail line is a bit short to get anything going. I ride mine with the g7 template on the sides with a medium h2 center fin. Magic combo for me.

Thanks foam ball- very helpful. Can you tell me are you a weight forward surfer or heavy on the back foot. Do you carve mostly or turn of your back foot more?

Hard to answer that because it depends on the wave. In average surf I suppose I'm on my front foot driving for speed to set stuff up in a lot of circumstances. In good waves the wave takes care of the speed, but of course there are plenty of exceptions. The board is a lot of fun in lined up surf.

I'm 155 lbs and ride 26L  of volume. 30L seems huge to me for the weight. At the end of the day its what your comfortable with. I think if you drop to 26L from 30 its gonna feel tiny to you. Its kind of a fishy shortboard you might like a little more volume based on your shortboard size.
