Granted, the waves are challenging...but, I'm pretty surprised at the lack of talent...I'm not looking for a steady diet of air 360s But, surfers that can make a few decent cutbacks, power slashes and not fall of their board Long live guys like Greg Loehr, Maurice McCoy ...of course Slater and the Hobgoods

The first (used) board I ever bought for myself with my own money was a 6'7" squash tail epoxy with neon green glassed on fins and a sick little barreling wave logo on the nose with the name "Greg Loehr" painted underneath and I used to think ... "Who the hell is Greg Loehr?" Found some pictures on my laptop: Edited: 09/18/2014 at 06:09 PM by BLat |

I used to think "Who is Greg Loehr" myself until about 20 years ago and Mitch Varnes hosted a rare, 1 time only "Surfing as Art" event at Melbourne Square Mall judging classic surfboards and the art work on them. I got paired up with Mr. Greg Loehr and only then did I realize not only was he a great surfer, a great craftsman, but also a historian of surfing and the craft of making surfboards. He knew everything there was to know. I cannot say enough good things about this guy!
Oh, and I believe he had a few choice rides in the 70's classic film "Fluid Drive" at Pipe. In 1977, he was the dominant surfer in the NKF held by Richard and Phil Salick at the famed Apollo Building in Cocoa Beach. November 6, 1977 was the date. An epic swell that the Cocoa Beach Surfing Company has dry mounted pictures of in the drive through section underneath, I believe of Robert "Nemo" Nemnich. I digress. Maybe, I was too hard on the competitors...they're doing a great job Watching the live webcast on ESA.com...and, I'll say this
Announcers are incredibly entertaining compared to the standard ASP fare I Understand the ASP is trying to present a legitimate major sports league commentary...and, they're doing a good job But the ESA webcast dudes? That's entertainment...these guys are funny, serious and compelling...great honest ride descriptions
Reminds me of Scott Goodwin who announced the Belmar Pro
