Two longboards in the parking lot about 8:15 looked like they were going to remain dry.

Maybe 2' surf, definitely long period with sets.  Might post a picture or two of birds later on...

Down South looks to be skunked. Earlier, the 1st Peak cam looked really weak.

They don't call it Zero Beach for nothing...er, yes, they do call it that for nothing! I've never seen a wave there. Why is that? Offshore reef?

Actual waves are rare compared to Inlet northward.  Some of it is the shallow, reefy offshore, although South Beach itself is reefless, except for a big pile of limestone rocks dumped off the condo row as mitigation for beach nourishment.

The Riomar reef to the north definitely shapes what surf there is.  The official north end of the surfing area seems to have a persistent, tiny rip current and is where closeouts give way to shoulders.  The beach southward seems more uniform, at least until you get well past the condo row.

Then there's rare occasions when things are different.  Very rare.  This was enough to make me want a decent camera.

'Cept for that rare ne swell with perfect direction, when south beach fires top to bottom barrels double overhead plus.  Snapped my shorty there one swell and busted out the long board.. scared shtless and shacked all at the same time... but with a hole lifeguards who call cops to get u out when no sane person is even swimming there.. there is truly a gaping void in that outer reef that tames monsters.

I'll never forget that April day in 199_ somethin when I learned how to turn or die!

\Thanks for the update ww

The beach is lousy habitat for surfboards.  They break.  Better for handplanes, sponges and skim. These are from the 2ndlight files.

sandy

This one's from Sandy, so doesn't count toward the regular board destruction

imp

Still, some do difficult things gracefully.  He was far better than my photo-taking.

sk

Nailed the landing, thusly:

That was a pretty amazing display of surfing by Slater. I was there that day- too late to see Slater surf but caught him afterwards in the parking lot signing broken boards for the groms.

On a previous hurricane in the middle 2000s I saw a local get a stand up barrell that lasted several seconds in that same spot that is in the video.

Apparently Sandy swell was considered long period.

How you feeling Glassy?
