An East Coast tradition for 52 years...competitor registration is down 25% this year to a 10 year low.  Although, pro interest is still strong.

Not sure if the city went through with its proposed fee hike to cover huge increase in security costs. There had been talk that the contest would no longer be held.

In any event, I hope this East Coast classic survives. There could be a decent Northeaster off Va Beach this weekend for the finals

Va beach sucks. Too many cops/military. The whole scene is wack.

I may have asked you about VB before. I had to move and live there for a couple of years. I came back to FL as soon as I can.

Only thing I can say is that at least I was not inland

Actually VB was pretty nice in the 80's and up until about 1992.  Would have been better longer if the "greeks"  would have been able to act civilized in 89'.     BUt I do not miss it and only go back for a HS reunion or a quick visit with an old friend.

guy to girl ratio there is like

1,000,000 to 1 (or something similiar)

Horrible military town with a bunch of kids from all over the country getting drunk for the first time or prepping to back out to sea. (I lived in Hampton for 3 years)

The thing about VB is: tradition

We're talkin great surfers like Wes Laine and now M. Dunphy.

Honestly?

VB is probably the worst break on the East Coast (excluding Georgia)...I think the Wash-Out in Folly gets better waves as does Myrtle but only cause of the more favorable water temps

For Van's (the sponsor) i guess it boils down to ROI...

Anybody know how a sponsor calculates surf contest ROI?

Seems like the Belmar, NJ contest always has a sponsor

I remember that! There many worse places to call home than VB, but I was glad to leave for good. I've lived all over Florida and every town has been better than VB, even Boca during grad school! Moving to Sat Beach area in October. Hopefully this is the last stop on my 20 year tour of Florida beach towns. I've been in Jupiter the longest, but I can't afford it anymore. Time to move on.
