The summer time blues have kicked in once again and got me thinking back to the days when endless inland perfection at the Surf Park was allegedly on its way.
After a quick Google search, I came across this video of Jamie Meiselman from earlier this year talking about what he thinks its going to take to make a surf park a reality. It's a pretty interesting presentation if you have about 40 minutes to kill. Surf Park Business Model Viability - Jamie Meiselman - Surf Park Summit

I'd be ok with having a Wavegarden built close to here. |

The (no longer around) Ocean Dome wave park in Japan seems to me to have been the almost perfect solution to surf starved regions like Florida. Fairly hollow, fast lefts and rights pumped out every 12 seconds without losing too much shape looks real good about now. Maybe the operating costs were too high but they couldn't have been any more than Typhoon Lagoon for a much punchier wave. A new water park is being built in Ft. Lauderdale but no sign of a surfable wave pool on the plans. With all the surfers in south Florida, a park like Ocean Dome could run 24 / 7 and still have a waiting list. I don't get it........

Surfing may require too much skill. I think someone's trying for a Florida version of the whitewater (rafting, kayaking, bodyboarding) facility near Charlotte, NC, which seems to be a big success. You can put most anybody in a raft or even a rubber duckie. |

Oasis Surf at Quartier DIX30 (shopping center somewhat like the one at Viera) east of Montreal, supposed to open in Nov. SurfStream technology, which doesn't look real great but allows boards with fins and takes up little space. Apparently one's operating inLima, Peru. Edited: 07/26/2014 at 11:49 PM by ww |

Bigger surf park by Greg Webber on the way in Sunshine Coast, Queensland.

That's just great! I know if I lived in Queensland instead of SoFla., I would be SO excited (not) to have a wave pool being built (near some of the best surf on the planet) nearby!

UK will get one by 2015...looks like the Goon, fun once or twice but until the tech gets head-high+ not worth it.

BBC Radio did have a Goon Show, once. Surf Snowdonia. Looks like a fairly modest project. |

You'd think a wave park would do better somewhere with inconsistent surf such as Florida as opposed to Australia which already has great surf all the time. |

After surfing Typhoon Lagoon several times, I concur, the feeling just isn't the same as surfing in the ocean. Too predictable I guess, same wave every time. My opinion might change if the man made waves were 6' hollow barrells, sharks were introduced to the tank and Frenchy was in the lineup to drop in on you at any given time. ------------------------- |

Ocean Dome seemed to barrel and a Wavegarden would at least be comparable to a waist high glassy longboard day. I think that's plenty rideable in comparison to normal FL surf. Skateboarders can skate at skateparks anytime so why can't surfers in FL be able to surf anytime. By making a successful wave pool surfing will be able to become more mainstream and won't require a beach bum lifestyle to be able to catch good surf. I'm sure if you wait long enough, they will come out with a quality 6ft+ wave, but it will probably never be the equivalent of any of the world class surf spots. |
