I'm new to surfing, and having gained 3 months of experience with my friend's 7'6 funboard, I want my own board. I have no experience with the shapers in Central Florida, so I was hoping someone would recommend a shaper for me. I'd want a shortboard that's meant mainly for the small East Coast smell but would have no trouble handling bigger waves, since I travel a lot. 19M 5'10 128lbs

Edit: Since there are so many in Central Florida, would you name some good ones in Volusia County, near New Smyrna Beach - that's the one I'm closest to

central florida is the mecca of local shapers on the east coast. You have an abundance of talent including Tom Neilson(my favorite), Ricky Carrol, Rich Price, Bruce Ragan, and much more

do they have the time to meet with me, talk about what I want out of a surfboard, and work that stuff out? or are they all busy?

Also, do you know about Cronin surfboards? Is he a good shaper?

Now what about the ones in Volusia? Sorry - I should have mentioned that earlier, I'm pretty far away from Cocoa. NSB

+1 for Geiselman.  Got two of his boards earlier this year and love 'em.  Also a great guy.  As mentioned tho, can't really go wrong with any of the guys you're considering.

You've got six months experience... You don't need a custom board. You need a proven shape that is easy to ride in Florida surf. Look to Channel Island or Lost for the proven standard shapes best boards. A CI Flyer or a Lost sub scorcher perhaps. Surf Station comes to mind.

this....and maybe try grabbing a board off the used rack, ride it a bit then trade it in for a different one. rinse and repeat. find out what you like and what works for you before you talk to a shaper...
