All you need are rails, fins are drag. Watch this video and you'll freak. Serious talent

Cool video.  I watched a few of the others.  He does paddle into some waves on a skimboard which is very cool.  He can also surf really well.

I love to paddle in skim. It is insane how free it feels. And once you can set your rail right you can get a ton of speed.

That was sick.... looks so UNnatural... all I ever got out of a skim board was a busted shin..

so which came first, the Alaia or the skimboard? Did I grow up skimming on alaia's? Of course we only had the round versions. This reminds me of Balsa Bill and the surfboard vs. longboard name confusion with the younger generation. It does look fun.

that and the skimboard style are the drawbacks but if i got towed into a wave like that on a skimboard i'd eat shit so i'm still impressed

Mental! Brad was out here on the north shore for a month this year. He got so many good Backdoor and Pipe barrels on his surf board. This kid rips!

Skimboards are harder to paddle in on over an alaia for sure.

I'm impressed, but imagine what he could do if he put some fins on that board. For one he wouldnt be swinging his arms to keep his stability. He could also follow thru on his cutbacks. Im not a hater, just jealous he can get pitted like that at Mexi-pipe on such sub-standard equpiment.

Fin companies hate this guy.  Who needs fins?    Ok, let me get this outta the way first.  Kudos to this cat.  I've seen some of his vids and he's supremely talented, no doubt.  Fearless?  Check.  The 360 shuvit in a cavernous pit?  Yeah.  Probably more talent in one foot than all of 2nd light combined.

That being said, it ain't that pretty.  Just sayin'.  The waves are awesome, sure.  And he knows how to get in the pocket and park himself on basically an indo board.  Yet he's constantly bogging and rolling the windows up.  He's a freak talent who charges and is pushing boundaries but limiting himself with his equipment, imo.  I'd like to see him on a finless mini simmons in that surf doing his thing.  Something with a proper bottom.  He wouldn't be able to pop shuvit but he could slide and spin his way down to El Salvador.  Check out his Chopes vid.  That's a sickie too.

the thing is that he rides surfboards too, he put a video out a few months ago with both. i think he is well aware that surfing exists and either prefers skimboarding or knows where his skills are...seeing him on something in between would probably be insane

Yes he could probably charge paddking on a <5 foot surfboard.

The skimboard he was paddling in on looked a bit bigger that his tow skim.

That's crazy stuff and the guy is clearly talented but it looks sketchy big time. Zero style on that thing. I'm sure on his surfboard he has loads of it but on that skimboard...not in my opinion.

Ground breaking? Not really...Derek Hynd has been surfing J-Bay finless for decades.
