New Smyrna Beach was recently selected by National Geographic Adventure, in a piece on its website, as one of the top 20 surf towns in the world.

In the National Geographic Adventure ranking, it was one of just seven U.S. towns to make the Internet list and the only one from Florida

The piece touts New Smyrna Beach as being best for "anyone whose idea of a good vacation is never leaving the beach."

Also Montauk, Wrightsville Beach.  National Geographic Adventure.  The US left coast north of Santa Cruz isn't on their map.

Too bad the inlet keeps getting worse and worse every year. The sand bars of the past are a fading memory. I've watched the over wedged JAP (just a peak with no significant line) form get worse and worse. Or the JAP straight into a trough.

But according to the article it sounds like New Smyrna is still riding the wave of popularity of what it once was, over a decade ago...

I explained exactly what I'm talking about - all of the JAP's at the inlet and it's gradually become worse since around the mid 2000's hurricane seasons. Whatever you thought was good last night is actually BS compared to what it would have been before. This is no different than Sebastian or Reef Road. We have several obviously deterioriated peaks around the state.

The Reef Road you find now isn't remotely close to what it ought to be, regardless of whether or not you have a fun session in the present. The first or second peak at Sebastian isn't remotely close to what it used to be, regardless of whether or not you have a fun session, in the present, on it's plethora of complete close outs. There are specific reasons for the fact that these breaks have all declined.

And New Smyrna Inlet is precisely the same - a deteriorated version of what it once was regardless of whether or not you had fun on those JAP's...

Let's face it, the Inlet's been 'road' hard and hung up wet.

he's right. I've only been surfing here for 25+ years and i don't know what I'm talking about. Getting senile in my middle age and am starting to think the waves are better than they are. I wish I was a Florida wave knowledge expert too! trust me, I wish the waves were not as good as they are so it wouldn't be so crowded all the time. actually ponce is better, it a point like break similar to malibu, go there instead!

NSI is not as good as it use to be ... and even more confined peak area ... just wait until the jetty extension is done, which will happen as soon as the funding can be secured. It is still one of the very most consistent spots on the entire east coast.

As for the remainder of the NSB beach break(s) (including Bethune) .... it has been badly screwed up since those back to back tropical storms hit about 5 - 6 years ago. Swells have a real bad habit of forming waves / peaks on the outside ... and just not quite breaking or just barely and then mushing out. Then they reform closer to shore ... and do the same crap ... and then they form 10 block long closeouts and dump on the shorepound.

I have baggies that are 25 years old. ;-)

New Smyrna is a kookfest. I have no idea why anyone would want to live or surf there.

It's like that down here now too.  sandbars are on the way outside.  it used to be only the biggest of swells would break on the outside...now it seems every swell breaks out there.  The 'Road still is good, but like others have said, no where near what it used to be.  There is a big shoal that formed just outside south of the inlet.  It bombs out there into a big mushburger, then rolls to the inside where you get the classic tubefest.  But imagine if that outside sandbar wasn't there??  Big swells making it all the way to the beach then jacking up and barreling down the shore....that's the way it used to be.....

That's exactly what it's come to nowadays as a matter of fact. If Ponce isn't breaking I don't bother to venture out in Volusia at all any more. The longer Jetty assures a consistent sand bar system, unlike what's become of the sand shifting south side...

I tried grasping at straws for several years because it was hard to come to terms with just how shitty the inlet was becoming. I was in denial for a while, just like you are now. But at one point I just had to face the facts and accept the reality of the situation.

Bingo!!!

I was wondering how long it would take for another honest soul to appear in the discussion. Come on guys and gals, I've merely stated the bloody obvious...

Thanks for the confirmation. Once again, for any one in the know I was merely stating the obvious.
