I'm not an environmentalist or any thing like that but Each time I surf, on my way back to the truck I pick up a piece or 2 or 3 of garbage. If everyone did this would it make a dent in the trash on some our dirtier beaches? Does anyone else do something similar?

I'm sure some of you dont surf at the big beaches where tons of people leave behind trash. Therefor you may not see any trash but when you do....?

I try to pick up as much trash as I can everytime I surf. During one of the bigger swells a few months ago the beach was covered in trash washed up from the storm. I drifted about a mile and as I walked back up the beach I filled my baggies pocket and hands with plastic pieces and other man made debris pretty quickly. I looked behind me and noticed a small pack of groms spread out scanning the beach doing the same! Just goes to show that if we set a good example for the younger generations they can and will do the right thing!

Henryedwards- I remember you from a PR post, you had to be surfing the same breaks at the same time in PR back in February. That swell was unreal. Even there we were picking up trash. I'm on schedule for a baby boy in September so we will see how a surf trip pans out in the future. My wife did say she would bring him along if we stayed somewhere a little nicer. Might end up staying in Rincon next time.

JLC- Sweet first post, I agree with you some groms do look up to the older generations, but then of course you'll find some that dont.

I live in Delray, walk the beach 2 times a day and pic up pounds of crap every day. I am tired of these lazy fuCTS who leave stuff on the beach and expect the rest of us to clean it up. Everytime I go up coast to your beaches in Central I pick up stuff too. We need to clean up our beaches, we need to raise awareness to the masses that this trash is killing the stoke, the wild life and one day it will all be gone!  Pick up your shit my 2012 and beyond initiative to save the stoke!

"Pick Up Three" is a global movement and an awesome idea...it's something most of us have been doing for ages anyway but nonetheless it's good to see it gaining a larger following. Pick Up Three Movement

I always try and pick up some trash after a sesh. We've got trash washing in from the ocean an trash left behind by kooks on the beach. I remember several evening sessions where I came in and it was obvious that a bunch of people had just left the beach and left hundreds of plastic bottles, fast food bags and all manner of assored plastic behind like it was a dumpster. If there's any cops reading this thread I think you guys should focus more on ticketing litter bugs than people driving through yellow lights etc. It should bring in plenty of revenue!

I do my best to pick up a handfull or two everytime I am at the beach.  Sometimes it is far too easy.

I remember that swell JLC was refering to as well.  I haven't seen such a dirty beach in a long time.  Too bad a ton of it washed right back out.

I walk the beach from Ponce south to the first home a couple of times a week. That's my spot for monitoring waves, erosion, turtles, crabs, birds, plants, bobcats, yes, there is at least one so hopefully two or more. I look for treasure but find trash mostlty. I look for seabeans and find them occasionally. I carry a five gallon bucket and a trash grabber and depending on the season can fill the bucket in 10 minutes or never fill it in that space. I've found some incredible trash. Oil and diesel in litre and gallon jugs. Toys, lot's of shoes. Summer southerly's bring the most trash. Winter northerlys scour the beach clean

Greensters got the right idea. Got his kid making it fun to do it. For something so easy its hard to NOT do it. Pick up 3 - how perfect is that.

If everybody did this our beaches would be cleaner and tons of waste would be removed everyday, all over the world. Good on you guys.

Be careful, though. You start by picking up trash and next you join Surfrider Foundation, then you're organizing beach clean-ups and passing around websites like this: http://www.surfrider.org/programs/entry/rise-above-plastics

Tell me about it. Especially this summer. It makes my day when I see a family start picking up trash when they're about to leave the beach

Don't just stop at the beach, either. See a trash bag and receipts flying around your feet the parking lot of Publix? Pick that puppy up.

Its a shame when people think the world is their trash can.
