Mods -- please keep this in the surfing forum
-------------------------------------------------------

RC's is not the sole meeting focus, but it's part of the discussion because it's in the Community Redevelopment District and this is a Community Redevelopment Agency meeting that seeks public input.

http://www.satellitebeachfl.or...c%20Mtg%2005-23-12.pdf

The meeting is Wed 5/23/2012 at the Schecter Center (rec center and gym area next to post office on S. Patrick); I heard 7pm, but the notice says it starts at 6pm.

A little birdie tells me the pace of discussion is picking up, and centers on development and redevelopment from the Atlantic/Publix Plaza and north thru Pelican Coast (across from Hightower).

There are large-scale, long-term ideas being discussed, which is not the same as planned. (You may hear of the "town center" concept again.)

I hope the surfing community will turn out, become educated, be heard, and take an active role in any redevelopment that takes place.

Please attend, be civil, and spread the word!

Community Redevelopment Agency Sponsor Public Meeting
Wednesday, May 23, 2012 (6-8 p.m.)
David R. Schechter Community Center
(1089 South Patrick Drive)

The Satellite Beach Community Redevelopment Agency Board has retained the services of Calvin-Giordano & Associates (CGA) to assist in writing a new CRA Plan.

CGA will be hosting a public input meeting to gather information that will help shape the future of CRA activities and its Community Redevelopment Plan.

Attendees at this meeting will explore ideas and potential projects and programs for the CRA's future work plan based on the needs and desires of our entire community.

So join us and share your vision on any topic from business attraction to code enforcement to beautifying our streets.

No matter what you are interested in, make sure to come out and have your voice heard so that together we can make Satellite Beach a more exciting and vibrant place in which to live, work and play!

This public input meeting will explore projects and programs for inclusion in the Community Redevelopment Plan, the guiding document of the CRA.

Topics relevant to the future direction of the City shall be explored including: business attraction, roadway enhancements, zoning laws and beautification of public spaces.

What is the relationship of PAFB to the Pelican Coast area?

So if you are a surfer I wish you the prosperity that allows you more time to pursue the salt water dream, and the true happiness that comes from warm water, clean waves and the companionship of your fellow surfers. If you are an internet troll just spewing bs then f off.

Whenever a City meeting announcement includes the word "vibrant", they've already been dazzled by a developer's idea. Good luck.

Dam I can't make the meeting I get off work at 715. But in my opinion they should open a beach access where you could launch catamarans and other small vessels from the beach.

you will not see any development on that site until the real estate market improves and it becomes profitable to build.

Curious, what would be the best outcome for the lot in the eyes of a 'local' surfer. I honestly haven't thought it through. Good to have one voice if we have a firm opinion.

1) Public Park - Yay for more crowds
2) Hotel - eh, most tourists aren't surfers
3) Condo - eh, most retirees aren't surfers
4) ...

-------------------------

If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.

^ For what it's worth, that void with no condos is probably best left alone. At least a park and parking lot wouldn't close off the void and possibly screw up the break.

Surfrider Foundation would encourage our Satellite Beach members and other"water people" to attend this meeting and seize the opportunity to participate. If you go, you can have a say. If you don't go, you let others decide what's best in their eyes.

not only would you get a few macker condo's on the beach property, how about if you lost the ability to park across the street at publix? Me, I'd rather have a park. It won't be undeveloped. If enough surfers showed up, and pushed the "town center" concept, couldn't it managed to push more for a park with some amount of parking and something to actually contribute to a "town center" approach?

Keep on the same premise of buc's weak "new" parking and crowds wouldn't really get out of control as I'm sure the parking across the street will be gone (or policed) as the city is trying to create an image besides strip mall A1A. Maybe even include some beach center or something.

Even if you can't make the beginning of the meeting, it might be good to drop in later. Frequently at these type of things, there's a breakout into groups to come up with ideas, then at the end a review of the ideas and discussion. Your input could be valuable at that point.

Satellite Beach has been one of the most forward-thinking communities on our coast. I don't see any reason that shouldn't continue if the people stay involved.

Very true, and in this sketchy economy for the last couple of years it would be a nice addition, but do you want it to be right at RC's?  I cringe to see a giant backhow ripping out all the sea oats to make way for a better view from the infinity pool....

Maybe the redevelopment committee can take the cheap approach and NOT develop the property and let it go back to its natural state.  Slap a sign in the sand and call it "Satellite Beach in the Raw" or some other cliche moniker for a green space.

pompano has a good point. Something's going to happen with all that property, both the oceanfront and across the street. Thinking long-term about access and use for the beach can pay big dividends to the city. If there's going to be a ''town center'', doesn't it make sense to have a large beach park right there? Combined with Hightower and the associated conservation land, that would be a world-class beachfront for a thriving business environment.

Get to the meeting! Be courteous and civil if someone doesn't share your viewpoint, but argue persuasively for a ''vision'' that includes surfing.

We went to it! ! It went good. It seems like a lot of people liked the park ideal! The RC's land is zoned for a 13-story building but can be changed to Rec. A few hotels are badly need, we don't think they need to be at the beach, across the street will do. We think hostels would be great, so surfers, anglers, collage students and ECT. Can stay with good rates and have the beach/lagoon to enjoy. That is what they have in Australia/Europe. If there are more meeting all post the dates.

Thanks for the report! I think it's great the city supplied this opportunity for public input; and that the citizens came out and participated.

Was there a ''next step in the process'' outlined by those in charge of the meeting?

Next step is how to skim of the tax increment and delude the residents into thinking a free lunch is for real. If Sat. beach hasn't learned it's redevelopment lesson by now it never will.
