Just got back from there and RiddleMe is right, use the ferry. It runs every two hours this time of year. If you miss one, just wait for the next one. It would still probably be quicker than driving around the gulf. Roads are now good on the other side of the gulf. The last 15 miles or so to Mal Pais is on dirt, but it's not that bad. A 3:00 or later ferry will have you driving some after dark. If you are familiar with driving in Costa it's no big deal.

Yes, you can make it...roads are waaayyyyy better than they used to be. Spend a couple extra bucks and get the gps. I second the GPS. I got one on my first trip up in North Costa and I swear every single back road you could find was on that thing, even all the way down to witch's rock (the best wave I have ever scored to this day). If you do not get a GPS you will get lost......very lost and good luck trying to communicate unless you speak spanish. |

Answering your question about JetBlue. I took the same flight, got quickly through customs, rented a car, and made it to the 3:00 ferry in Puntarenas. Departed ferry in Paquera and made the drive to MalPais/Santa Teresa in about two and a half hours (stopped at the super mercado in Cobano). The last half hour of driving was after dark and on dirt roads (sun set about 6:00). There's really only one road into the area, without a lot of side roads, so you shouldn't worry about getting lost. If you are ok with driving a little after dark, than it is no big deal. If you wait until the next day in San Jose, you will probably miss the morning offshores, and waste the best part of one day of surfing. It all depends on your level of comfor with driving there. Have fun!

My last trip was similiar except they has just filled the pot holes and we were able to haul ass. Got there in time for an hour long session in head high glass before it got too dark to see. I was staying a short walking distance from the little market by Tomate so just went later. ------------------------- "I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Nico, a few buddies and I went down there last summer for a week trip. We flew into San Jose. We took a private taxi to Puntarenas ( around $70 USD) This was worth it because it was a straight shot and it was just us guys in the car. We took the Tambor II ferry which runs every 3 hours, last one was at 9 pm. We took the ferry to Paquera and once we got off we paid a taxi driver to drive us to north end of Santa Teresa (next to Mal Pais). Had an awesome time. Make sure you rent Atvs and go surf Cabuya (right point break). We posted some photos on photofable. It'll give you an idea on what to expect. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Safe travels. |

Nico,
I think you'll make it if there are no delays with the rental. I drove to Santa Teresa in mid-March and the roads were in excellent shape, don't remember dodging any potholes. I've taken a van there before as well and it drove fine. (Just be sure to reserve one early since those tend to sell out) As for a place to stay, I have some favorites on the Mal Pais page. ------------------------- http://www.crsurf.com ~ CR Surf Travel Company http://www.dadecosurf.com ~ South Florida Surf Site http://www.surfrider.org ~ Find your Surfrider chapter |

I second Beachclyde. Fly into Tambor. You can arrange to have a rental waiting for you. Tropico is a little pricey but worth it. My wife loved it.
