I stopped by the hospital on my way home to see how he was doing. I expected him to be fine but i saw one of the people he was with in the parking lot and he told me that he had passed. We did all we could though. It just really sucks cuz i was so happy and thinking we saved a life, but we didnt.

Props for trying. I was super rattled a few years back playing in a band at a teen Camp in Daytona, a kid the same age as my son had drown 3 days before the event, right in front of the event site. And my freakin kids have no fear at 5yo and 13yo, they can both tread water for over an hour easy, but fear and panic can change that to a few second if someone gets choked by water and loses orientation and strength to fight and swim. Very sad, but good job halling them into the shore.

Still props to you. We may all fuss and fight some, but thats natural. I think we should take pride in what we do for the safety of tourists. I can tell you Trip Freeman was very underated and inspired the right frame of mind to keep an open eye when we are needed to help swimmers out. Sorry you guys might be bummed the guy didn't make it. At least you gave him a chance with your rescue.

A friend was jogging through the woods on vacation in England and turned the corner and there was a guy down having a stroke/heart attack. My friend tried everything but nothing worked - DOA. For months he had a hard time with not being able to revive the dude. It prompted him to get near EMT level training. I look at it -- everyone has their appointment, heroic efforts might postpone it, however, if it's your time then it's a matter of fate. Kudos for heroic efforts, but sometimes there are bigger forces at work.

Consult, that is true about panic. I ran a live aboard dive boat in Bahamas for a decade and often had to participate in rescues. It  always is panic that leads to a drowning. I also have little kids that charge w no fear. I was watching my 7 yr old daughter get a set wave on the head yesterday and thought how could I live with that if she pabniced and drowned. It can turn so fast,  but she came up with a smile and paddled right bacvk out. My kids are 3 and 7. They are in Ocean or pool everysingle day. I am sorry and pray for the victim, that is horrible.

Couldn't say any better.  It shows tremendous character to try and give everything you could to help someone out.  Blessings to all involved.

i am an EMT and i know how good it feels to save a life!! but sometimes you do all you can and everything you have been taught and be the most experienced person with all the training in the world and it is just not enough!! it really does suck but im sure that the family still thinks the world of you for trying for them and the sole that was lost!

I wandered into this video in which a guy with a little video cam in a sandwich bag shows his own descent into panic.  It's not much, but it might be unique.

YouTube.

Sad.

I remember watching a guy drown when I was a kid.  Marine.  He was drunk and acting obnoxious to everyone, as were his friends.  So when his friends started yelling at us and swearing, we cleared out, not knowing that they were trying to borrow a board to float their buddy.

Tell Justin he was honorable for trying. I remember from my Red Cross Advanced Life Saving training a statistic something like 95% of those requiring CPR do not survive. It's the way of things.

Brother, when you get a minute, could I get a list of the words that trigger these fits?

Hey. Where are we going? (And what are we doing in a hand-basket?)
