It was slithering out in the road on the South West side of cell 1, Heading toward the ditch. When we passed by it opened it's mouth, as they do when threatened, but it would not do it again while I had the camera pointed at it. And I was not getting any closer than I was already, seeing as I was out of my truck at that point, and they are venomus .

Nice shots! I really liked the first one's effect...very cool.
Didn't know much about the Cottonmouth so I at least found out why they're called Pit Vipers...

The cottonmouth is a pit viper. It possesses a pair of heat-sensing pits between their eyes and nostrils. The pit consists of two cavities, an outer and an inner, which are separated by a membrane. They are able to detect temperature differences of as little as 1.8° F (1° C). higher or lower than that of the background. They allow the snakes to strike very accurately at the source of heat--often a bird or mammal that is potential prey. The sensory apparatus is most efficient at night when prey are much warmer than the surrounding air.

the effect in the first one was caused by the roof of my truck, totally accidental. But some of my best shots are ones I thought would be ruined LOL.

If I see the Cottonmouth out there this week I'll pluck the parasite from his face.

Nice, great capture on the moccasin. Bass fishing once, I had one hanging from a tree limb out over the water as I tucked my self in a little cove. Looked up and this 4 foot Cottonmouth was about 12 inches from my face, mouth wide open and fangs glistening! I froze, then backed out, ever so slowly, never did strike thank god!

I am starting to realize this. I didn't know they would give chase, and I was kneeling down about 15 ft away. I was thinking, what I learned about rattlers, that if I am 2 X the distance of the length of the snake away I am out of it's striking distance. Good thing it didn't chase me, I would have screamed like a girl and jumped up on my truck bed LOL.
