Hey kid! Yup, I too was living in the 14-16th street surf ghetto in the '77 time frame. I used to ride a 7' single fin swallow tail shaped by Jim Shipley (How's that for a name from the past?) flame airbrush by Bruce Williamson. And I hope your mom still isn't P.O.'d at me and Billy Walker teaching you "Roll me over in the clover" when you were about 4. Do you remember DCB shaping some crazy looking board in the morning, glassing it at noon and riding it in the afternoon? He didn't even knock the sharp edges off!! T Smith on that 5'9" 16" wide single fin that he made...that only he could even stand up on? All of us (Walker, Webster Bros, T Smith, Jim Bird, your pops and me) keeping an eye on YOU when you'd paddle your skinny ass out on a hurricane swell? Most of us were goofyfoot, so I guess you just figured it was the only way to ride.

Jim Shipley ... CLASSIC!
He ran Catri's Shaggs Surf Shop up on da pier for a while, remodled van interiors (wood paneling, double bed, 8 track player, lotsa speakers, shag carpet everywhere), made boards ... and did a lotta stuff I can't mention here.

He was cool and always good to me.

I've got the neighbor's Shipley in my garage. Kinda beat, he repaired it with "boat resin". Needs work.

Does it have the hand drawn outline of the State of Florida on it? Doesn't have a flame airbrush on it, does it?

Yeah...Jim was a piece of work? He became a Jehovah Witness ya know. He left town around 1980 for N. Carolina and about 3 years later I bumped into him again in Cocoa Beach and asked why he came back. Apparently it was coming up on the "End of Days" according to the Jehovah's and after Armageddon only Jehovah's would be left on earth and he was going to claim Cocoa Beach!! I sh!t you not, that's what he told me.

I'm adding a guy named Gary Hollaway from Jax to my list. I surfed with this guy in Nica last week.....Absolute king of the barrel. I never saw anyone make more critical take offs and get so deep for so long at Colorodos.

Do not know him all that well ... I lived in NE Fla for close to 20 years and met him through a couple of groups and contests that I was involved with. He is a former East Coast Champ and does rip.

I had seen several vid clips of him in Nic on a report site in Jax Bch and the people at The Surf Sanctuary told me that David was spending a lot of time in Nic, at Dale Dagger's place

I stayed with Daggers back in the early 90's when he was getting the Nic gig off the ground. That was back before any of the other surf camps had sprung up. He is a real piece of work. While I do not know the origins of the nickname ..... if it got "hung" on him by one D Daggers ... I could venture a guess.

Dale is a fantastic surfer and the only 4A rated surfer ever to come from Orlando. He had an unusual style but would so deliberately carve up the surf and was so smooth down the line. One of the nicest guys I have ever met. I lost touch with him and his brave struggle with Cancer, Dale , I am thinking how cool it was to surf so much with you!!

sorry, also Albie, TS, and billy webster and some guy from NY named Wes that lived with sean and dan murphy, da Yankee brothers, and good ol' floyd foist took the best shots of em all and  had the best slide shows back when i was a kid. in this info/tech overload of the  new millenium, i really miss the thrill, anticipation, and hoots and hollers of a slide show. i still think a gr8 surf photo is tenfold better than an hour of film,... oops, its video, sorry. im getting old!  Col.
