I have a faded memory of seeing Tom Petty at the Pines in IHB about '76 or '77. Did it happen or is AllTimers disease setting in? ------------------------- Old and Slow can be stylish if you eliminate the jerky part |

Quite possible. I was still in Gainesville at the time and TP was the leader of a house band (at Dub's). The band was Mudcrutch.

I think I remember hearing that Petty and a couple of the Heartbreakers jammed witht his friend Marty Jourard at George's in Cape Canaveral at that time. I know they used to play in the same band up in Gainesville; for some reason I believe the group was called Road Turkey.

Never heard the name "Road Turkey". They were "Mudcrutch" from at least 1973 until they went to CA and became the Heartbreakers (in 1979 or 1980). They were the house band at Dub's and opened all the free concerts at UF. The first time I saw them was at the Halloween Ball behind Hume Hall in '73. They opened for the other two bands.

He had or still has a house in Crescent Beach, near St. Augustine. He used to come into a restaraunt I worked at. Nice guy!

From Gainesville Today dated July 28, 2011: “(Petty) said, ‘This is my body guard’; I said, ‘You don’t need a bodyguard in Lipham Music Company’; he says, ‘Well, Buster he goes with me wherever I go… they pull at my hair; they pull at my clothes,’” Lipham recalled. So he invited Petty back to his office for some privacy. They entered the room; Lipham shut the door, but it was immediately pushed open by Petty’s muscle. Lipham was incredulous. “It was weird,” he said. Flashback to the young Petty. Marty Jourard knew him well. His band Road Turkey often opened for Petty’s Mudcrutch from 1973-1974. Stan Lynch, of Road Turkey, would later join the Heartbreakers. From Marty Jourard's Website:
We developed a set list of 45 fine cover tunes (Allman Brothers, early Rock 'n' Roll, Traffic, Stones, some early punk songs like "Little Red Book" by Love and several Kinks songs). We also became friendly with another Gainesville band, Mudcrutch and began sharing gigs with them:
![]() Shown below is an assortment of friends (including a very solemn baby) and members of Road Turkey and Mudcrutch sitting on an abandoned truck in a cow pasture in Gainesville circa 1973. Why, in a state with 100% humidity most of the year and summer temperatures in the high 90s and low 100s, did we all have so much HAIR? I'm the guy about to pop a shook-up beer all over Jim Lenahan, who is sitting on a toilet bowl. The guy in sunglasses holding his foot---Benmont Tench--- is inarguably one of the most accomplished and widely-recorded keyboard players in rock music. The blonde fellow to my left, also in shades, is this Tom Petty fellow I previously mentioned. We knew how to have fun back then. Throw a barbeque!

"Flashback to the young Petty. Marty Jourard knew him well. His band Road Turkey often opened for Petty's Mudcrutch from 1973-1974. Stan Lynch, of Road Turkey, would later join the Heartbreakers." From the way this was written, Marty Jourard's band was Road Turkey, not TP's (whose was, as I said, Mudcrutch.)

@Garcia: I inerrpret it this way. Mary had a band called Road Turkey. While they (Road Turkety) played at George's --an old late-nite haunt of mine, by the way-- Petty and a few of his bandmembers from Mudcrutch jammed with them (at George's). Never meant to infer that Petty played in Road Turkey. Peace. |

You're probably right. Mention of George's brings back some memories. I lived down south and spent my dollars at Golden Dolphin, Mac's 5th Ave, etc. But, when all else failed, we went to George's in a last desperate attempt to score. If I recall, they stayed open until 4 AM, which was way after everything else closed (at 2).

Used to go to Macs on 5th, as well as the Zoo Room over in town. My dad owned Rocket Liquors from '60 to '70 near the A Frame in the Gaskin's Plaza, at which time he sold to his partner, Max. |

Holy crap, your DAD owned the Rocket?! That was an serious institution. I used to go there after the drinking age dropped to 18 in '73. We'd go to the Dolphin to shoot pool, then go to the Rocket for a drink. We would bug the tar out of the serious drinking old men with our long hair and because we tried to engage them in a conversation. But, they just wanted to sit there and drink in silence. Occasionally we would get them to open up, but not often. We used to play the bowling game on the back wall. My dad's buddy, (something) Simoneaux (sp?) was elected the mayor of the Rocket because he practically lived there. His wife chased him out one time using his distributor and plug wires as a cat-o-nine tails. When I was young and the Penney's mall had just opened, I asked my mom if we could go into the Zoo Room to see the animals. Little did I know. I am betting that you and I know each other. I had my name written in the cement when they poured a slab down at the south end of the plaza, next to the post office, where Gaskins ended up (after the PO moved to Sat Beach and Gaskins moved down from the north end).

I was the longest living Rocketeer who had never had his name on "the list"! First went in there with my folks when I was but a pup in 58-59. Met Super Man there.
Zoo Room!! OMFG! What a freaking dive! But, Oops! My drink (Rum and Coke) was poured and ready before I sat down. |

@garcia: My dad owned Rocket Liquors 61-69, selling to his partner Max Kahn in late-1969 and moving back to South Florida. I clerked in the store (off and on) from '67 to '69, bartended there a bit, mostly just to hang with my dad. Max's son moved the license up north a couple streets long after that. To tell the truth, I can't remember Gaskin's moving from north to south end, but then, I wasn't big on geography (laff). They had a killer soda fountain there back in the Sixties, I remember that, and Gaskin would open up late at night if you were a regular and needed a 'scrip filled. Pretty cool guy, as I recall. @dingpatch: We might've known each other. Did you ever know a guy in SB named Phil Griffin, worked at the Cape, used to hang there pretty reularly? That wasn't me, but I remember him. How about Michelle Davis from SBHS? Eleanor Conn? Teri Toomer? |
