Amazing to hear so much about David, I only knew him for a couple years when he and Doug Teed surfed together a lot and me and a few others always seemed to be in the same places. Glad to hear he is still in the water.

I used to surf with dcb in pr in the 80's places like tennis shoe reef, avalanche secret spots north of isabela, he always was riding small winger stinger curved finned boards. would bet anyone $100 he could hang ten on 1st wave don't do it he would win, we screamed across the dunes in a vw bug racer being chased by mad pr dudes with machetes. wow    lots of pics of him he was best big wave charger I have ever seen. oh by the way its spelled Balcerzak

and, i said, i heard about him when i was in aguadillia in 94-95; didnt say i saw him. juan ashton, and a few rincon locals were talking about him. new name cuz of disgruntled ownership, but, i am sheepinlace, sean volland, and i started this thread and grew up as a grom at 14th/15th street watching DCB, B Wolfe, Claude, Valuzzi, Christel Roever, her bro Max, Kech, Braley, Kimbo, Troll, and da likes setting the pace, bt DCB and Tim Briers were so far ahead of everyone, it was amazing, and inspiriing to a young grom who would later grow up with Kelly Slater!

yep Steve, u r so right. He, Barry Wolfe, T. Briers, and Valuzzi used to put on such rad spectacles of surfing,.. say 74-78, when i was a grom growing up at 14th Street; Fully my heroes!!!!. DCB was like the east coasts Mike Purpus!

agreed, kookinmyer
I've seen those tripped out tripple winger 6 fin boards with the foiled fins, sharp rails near the tail, drawn out template and pointy nose ... kind high-performance mini-gun space ships.
... all trademark DCB

but da Colonel is right, though .. in that DCB was the East Coast's Mike Purpus.

Why compare east to west? How many pipe masters or world champs has California produced? THE EAST COAST RULES! No way could Purpus ride dcb,s 5-1 16 inch wide pocket rocket.

KookinMyer, obviously analogies are over your head, u werent really here with da boys in the mid to late 70's as I was, and your intensity of the east vs west thing is quite stale! just saying bro, i definetely know a bit more of what i speak, from 1st hand experience, than u do! Just saying.......! and a few of the heavies on here obviously concur! and Purpus might not have "shaped" triple stringer 6 fins, but he was one of the first to ride shorter, multi-winged, deep channeled, sick-sticks at giant inside Sunset and backside at heavy, early on Pipe! do some homework, dont just collect the past, know it!
