Is anybody fertilizing their tropicals (heliconias, hibiscus, etc), palms, peaches, etc yet? I usually wait until mid-March, but, it has been so warm I am thinking of doing it tomorrow. I like to wait for a rainy day (atypical for Spring in most years, anyway), but there is none on the horizon. So, it means walking around with a hose for a couple of hours (a task Id rather avoid).

I fertilized my palms last weekend. I usually wait until March also. My final application last October was washed away when we had that huge 7-10" of rain event.

My Sweet Tart mango and all my jabos have been flowering for the last 10 days, so I put out Osmocote last weekend and ran the sprinklers all week. My 40 or so potted figs started leafing out last weekend, so planning to up pot half and dose them all with TotalGro today.

I fertilized and watered it in today, so, despite the wx forecast, we will probably get 6 inches of rain tonight so as to wash it all past the roots.

Climate prediction is for cool but not extremely cold, so looks OK to go ahead with fertilizer.  Not so sure about planting caladiums.

I lightly fertilize. I usually use acid-loving formula. or, palm special, citrus formula. Low nitrogen as I don't want quick growth or burn the plants.

But, it is tough doing this time of year when it is so dry. Looking like a possible rain event this weekend. (hope I didn't curse it)

Be careful with some of the slow release osmocote when using with food bearing plants. Some of their stuff has a warning to avoid usage on fruits and veggies.

I rarely fertilize at all anymore. I just recycle most of my yard and kitchen waste into my yard. I have a few hidden area in my yard where I stack up palm fronds and large items. I have a little countertop bin to put all my compostable kitchen waste. Its amazing how much compostable matter you can put in the yard. Rather than using a compost bin I just dig a trench and bury it. Other than that, I gather bagged oak leaves in March when Oaks are dropping their leaves. Oak leaves make great mulch since they choke out weeds and readily decompose. Its a little more work but more sustainable than using chemical fertilizer or expensive organic fertilizer which is often made from sewage sludge. Also I add Azomite which is crushed volcanic rock for the micronutrients. I believe this makes the vegetables and fruit I grow much more nutritious than commercial grown produce.

I just threw 50 pound bag of cottonseed meal. Bought on amazon prime. Google says that is pretty good stuff. The rain is soaking it in as we speak. That should help a little. Says it is good for acid lovers, which 90 percent of my garden is. Put about a coffee cup a plant. 2 or 3 cups for the bigger jaboticaba. Stuff was pretty clean and not smelly like other fertilizer.

Applied some cheap palm fertilizer to the whole yard ahead of the latest downpour.

Can anyone recommend a fertilizer for feeding our variegated ginger?  What about Palms and Bananas?  We are in Melbourne Beach.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Doug

bananas can be heavy feeders due to their fast growth. Palms also. Citrus or palm special fertilizer works pretty good.
