I am 7 blocks from the ocean and my 2 mango trees have significant browning of their leaves after the storm (I assume salt spray). What is the best course of action for the trees? Will they be good as-is? Should I trim them back? Am i screwed? Any information would help! Thanks

I'm 3 milies inland and we've got all sorts of leaf browning on oaks and almost everything else, on their east sides.  Lots of one-sided trees and bushes.

Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne simply stripped leaves from the same trees.  I expect most of the damaged leaves to fall quickly.  The oaks are likely to flush out with new ones.  Mangos are toward the end of their growing season, so might be prepping to go dormant for the dry winter.

Wait and see.  Don't hurry to cut.

Just got internet back this morning. Yes, mango got scorched. They will rebound nicely. do nothing. I wouldn't even water them. Hopefully we get some rain.

For other plants that are hurting you probably want to water. The past week was a mini-drought and hot conditions. Plants are stressed. I'm gonna lose some palms from Irma. My jaboticaba leaves were stripped. Most palms have a 45 degree lean.

Thanks for the info. Most of the leaves are gone but looks like it is already about to sprout new growth.

It is difficult to kill a mango.

My medium sized mango tree lost all the leaves on the windward side. Actually about 75% of its leaves are on the ground. I raked them all up around the base of the tree, about 2 to 3 feet deep. I figure it would make for some good natural mulch. Is this a good idea or not?

All the mangos should be flushing out now. Near me an acre of scorched mango is breaking out in new flush. One of mine that got topped and hedged back to the ten foot level is flushing also.

Try and keep the bark shaded to prevent sun burn. I take palm fronds and put them up in the trees to make temporary shade.

So how are the trees looking now that it's been a while? We had major tree damage (limbs, all leaves, oaks and maples mostly). I removed damaged limbs but the leaves are finally starting to recover now that it's spring. We need rain!

FWIW, the areca palm inside the house is dying. We have an atrium with a fully grown (30') areca right in the middle, and I guess it just took too much damage. I need to have it removed and the root ball cleaned out, which is going to be an awful mess and I think I need to get an expert in (we aren't living in the house currently as it's still being repaired).

I suppose I was just wondering if everyone else's trees are getting back to normal or if you lost any. I am going to get someone in with a bobcat to clear out the back 1/4 acre, as it's become way overgrown with us not living there (it's amazing how fast the jungle takes over!).

Couple miles inland.  The two mangos were not much bothered by Irma.  They aren't entirely covered with flowers, but I think I see a good crop from both on the way.  Mallika and Lancetilla.

About 150 yards from the beach , Julie Mango is flushing well as is Bailey's Marvel but the Hadens and Glens look rough, expect low production this year.

Biggest issue our area is an explosion in the squirrel population, they are being fed an endless supply of peanuts from some condo owners nearby. Is there a way to remove them keep them off the trees w/o extermination or trapping?  Lost a bunch of fruit last year as the population grew, this year they are going to take everything...cats will get a few here and there (amazing to see a cat actually catch one and snap the neck, then proudly bring it over...good cats!)...Spoke w/ condo owners and they stated they would stop feeding them but they have not.

Squirrels: Sucks. Can't let them be comfortable in yard with fruit. either figure away to scare them, wrap the fruit, or exterminate them. Good Luck! Man has been fighting with rodents on their crops forever.
Well Water: depends on the quality. A lot of salt probably not good, especially for avocado. Avocado needs more water and care. Sort of like a citrus in care. Mango....never water it. especially this time of year when in full bloom. So far we have had perfect dry and warm conditions for mango. Mango like it dry this time of year.

I'm 7 blocks from the beach in Satellite. My Haden is in full bloom, the best it's looked in years. My Tebow got beat up in the hurricane this year. It doesn't have any blooms but is sprouting all sorts of new life. Tebow mangos will have to wait til next year...

Our squirrels have become accustomed to the sound of the daisy BB gun getting cocked. They freeze as soon as they hear it. When the BB's roll down the barrel, they take off. I take great pleasure in lobbing a BB in to the hindquarter of the furry bastards.

Don't water mango now. It is normal a mango will shed some fruit this time of year. But, when you water the tree thinks it is growing season and will shed even more. At least that is the theory. Once a mango is established, and it doesn't take long, maybe 3 months. Don't ever water it again. I don't. My Glenn mango probably has about 2,000 fruit on it right now.

However, Irma did hurt most of my other mango. They have bounced back.

My mango is FULL of fruit. Going to be a huge year in spite of small fruit drop every now and then.
