The posting of some pre-digital photos got me to thinking. . .

Do you remember:

Nort's LaScene (the original jazz club at the very east end of the 520, as well as the disco that opened across the street)

Bea Morley's Mousetrap

Shagg's Surf Shop (on the pier and in Indialantic)

Royal Castle (by the glass bank building)

Alma's Pizza

Kenny Cohen's band "The Fantastic Group"

Mike Melby (drummer in "The Fantastic Group"

Michelle ("Micky") (Davis) Melby

"Fred King," "Melvin," "Steve Canyon," "Hal Martin," and "Simon T" from WKKO

"J The K" at WTAI

Lee Caron's Carnival Club

Bill & Marjane Feinberg at Oceanside Surfboards

"Abort the abort!"

The Thirsty Turtle (where Coconuts is now)

Seeing Jethro Tull at the Cape Kennedy Hilton

Ted Lund

Bill Volmer

Jerry Propper (Gary's brother)

Jan McCutcheon

Marylou Mullen (teacher at CB High)

Wolfie's (in the old Ramada, where the south section of the Holiday Inn, CB, is now)

Driving on the sand in CB
Note: Scene, as near as I can tell, is of the access ramp at Minuteman

When A1A had only two lanes

Dr. Joe Von Thron, early CB physician

Martin Caidin

Joe Morgan

Doug Dederer (the Surfside Slant)

George Meguire

The bar at Tom Burkehead's Satellite Motel (circa 1973)

"Murph The Surf"

Well, do you?

These are a few of my memories. What are yours?

Mouse Trap ... my 1st job upon migrating to Cocoa Beach from the Outer Banks in 66. Best steak in town. Lost my virginity to a 25 year old cocktail waitress ... stoked.

Food Fair across AIA from Canaveral Pier ... my 2nd job. Ed Ostrosky and I kept our boards in the stockroom and would bail to the pier for a quick surf during our lunch breaks.

KFC on AIA across from Canaveral Pier ... 25 cent bags of French Fries got us thru a full day of surfing.

RonJon shop on the pier ... managed it 1968-1970, parked my '65 Falcon next to the shop up on the pier. My dog Bubba had the run of the place. Gave live surf reports over WKKO AM radio. more ...

BJC ... Brevard Junior College (before it became Brevard Community College) shared classes with Claude Codgens, the Salicks and others.

... good times

The turtle did rock, Bob Went there in college with my girlfriends a few times- who were star struck over surfer dudes then! OMG, what fun! I was 18-19 and knew nothing about surfing, but was educated quite well from the crowds that hung there!

Krystals THAT was THE place to pig out after a surf session at Cocoa Pier!
How many bitty burgers could you wolf down? I think they were 25cents each.

Ted was called "Tiny". LOL! He died in prison.

It was the Sea Gull before it was the Turtle. Went to a "happening" there before it was the Sea Gull.

Used to see J the K all time, would call in and ask him to play Lou Reed's "Heroin".

Jethro was a good show. Saw Canned Heat there also.

Had a tab at Wolfies, that was never paid, Frank would never take our money.

Met Murf and Hobie together at the pier. Never thought that somebody "so old" could surf! LOL

Hulk's band was the house band at the Anchor. He was a pretty OK guy. The Anchor WAS TGIF.

Did the "Rock Lobster" with Bill and Grace Nelson at George's!

Ramon's had the best ceasar salad and prime rib.

B & B Printing. Bernie gave me bowling lessons. He bowled the first 300 game on TV. He took bowing to Australia in the fifties while working for Brunswick. He hired a kid to work at the lanes named Bernie Farrelly. He said he thought the kid was a pretty good surfer.

Used to play gigs at the Turtle on Sunday afternoons.

Bill and Marjane talked me into moving to CB from San Diego. 1973

Man, summa you guys are old...

Here's my contribution-1st some pix. Some are from the Brevard Mosquito Beaters website http://www.mosquitobeaters.org/ lots more photos on the site.
Meeting is March 13th and 14th this year-Check it out-really a great organization-you'll see people from all over Brevard that have been around here a long time.

Joe Morgan 1966... Cape Worker, Bank Vice Prez and Cocoa Beach Mayor

The Samoa and the Glass Bank

CB Welcome sign, Starlight Motel and Lee Caron and the Kut-Ups

Some memories:

Nort's LaScene-Nort Kurlan wouldn't pay the man who paved his parking lot so the guy came back and tore up the whole lot with a front-end loader-saw it happen-it was in the paper next day.

Back when driving on the beach was allowed, saw a family from Indiana or Illinois washing the mud from their car with ocean water-looked really clean-car probably rusted away before they got home...not a whole lotta salt water in the midwest I guess.

That big globe sign in front of the Satellite Motel rotated in the wrong direction. Also, one day the Motel put a bunch of girls wearing skimpy Bikinis out on A1A to attract business-heard it on the radio-after several fender-benders, CB Police made 'em stop.

My 1st day in Florida-Jan. '66, I chatted with a young Surfer Kid up by Canaveral (now Cocoa Beach) Pier. Really helpful guy-answered all my questions about resturants, shopping, directions to places etc. etc. Saw the Kid's pic in the paper a few days later-name was Gary Propper.

The convenience store / sub shop just past Oceanside SS ... what the heck was the name of it? Was it Patrick Deli?

The Mexican Rest across the street from ^^ .... Gringo's (I think) ... Do remember that they served great breakfast and we had a friend that cooked there. We would order pancakes and he would load up eggs, bacon and sausage between the layers.

The Rest across from the Glass Bank (it has been a 10000 dif ones) was a Pizza place in the mid 70's. Can not remember the name (I am detecting a theme here) ... I do remember that the owners had an INSANELY hot daughter!

Bernard's Surf Restaurants crab bisque soup was the best I have ever had, and their skirt steak.

Alma's for a great pizza and Italian food & Ramon's for a great Caesar salad.  Lums in Satelite Bch. after surfing.

Running the AP's at P.A.F.B. ragged on dirt bikes--

Don mon Grassio aka Chris Springer practicing his stagger wearing that sombrero (may he rest in peace).  What a hoot he was!

Nice! Alot of  history there, its cool to see that there are lifetime locals still involved in surfing. This only goes back to the 80s but does anybody remember " The Morning Sun " restaurant ? It was located in the corner of the plaza that MTB and Bunkys are located. That was the only place that would show surf movies while you dined and was sure to get you amped for the morning sesh .

Wet "T" Shirt contests at Moe Kirschenbaum's Missile Lounge (I think that was the name) across from Bernard's Surf.

Jeff Crawford, Greg Loehr and Mark Rhodes on the Oceanside Surf Shop Team.

20 cent tolls on Pineda and 528 causeways. (Always paid the grumpy Indian toll taker in pennies, he HATED that!)

The Booby Trap Lounge! (No Comment)

George Panton's "Desperation" (aka "Inspiration) Surf Shop in South Cocoa Bech next to the 7-11.

Speaking of "Inspiration" Surfboards. My younger son "rescued" one from a trash pile some weeks back and brought it to me to make it rideable. Though it's in one piece it's beat to hell and brown and above my repair skills. I haven't measured it but it's a single fin semi gun shape, 3 stringers around 7'0". Definitely an early '70's shape. Small "Inspiration" decal on the deck near the nose.

Remember " Clines' bait and tackle "?  The owner had a huge gun collection strewn about the place in no particular order literally piled up in some cases. I'd say maybe 600 + guns maybe more, everything from muskets to machine guns. I tried to do an internet search to be more acurate but found nothing. Those who have been there would agree that it was cool to browse around in there while picking up bait.

Old man Cline got ripped off years ago. He had way more than 600 guns, and would get really pissed if you tried to buy any of them. Had an old red Doberman (that roamed the store)who would have followed a burglar home. I heard that his survivors did sell the remainder of the gun collection for a pretty penny.

Remember shaggs from the mid-70's until they shut down at BW a few years back?  Maybe longer?  I thought that was a Krystal Burger near Brassy's/Glass Bank?  Didn't read anything above so maybe it was covered?

Great Post!!

How 'bout....

Cocoa Beach Surfside Playhouse to catch surf flicks.  Beer bottles rolling down the aisles with a nice aroma filling the air!

Keg parties on Tortiose, Samsons, and Lansing Islands.

The drive-in movies at the Palms and IHB.

No leashes, followed by the deadly bungie chord leashes, followed by the Power cord leashes.

Single-fins.

George Panton and his asymetrical Inspiration shapes.

The sand floor at Oceanside Surf Shop.

Whoa.. the memories!

Nice....lotsa memories there.
I have video footage from Brevard dating back to late 50's.
My dad was a photographer for Space Coast magazine and pretty
much had camera, movie gear wherever we went.
I'll have to cut some clips and post 'em up.

Philips screwdrivers, late night at Jonathons. Listening to Hotel California in the line-up coming from the jukebox at The Islanderhut. Working with the crew at Pelican Point followed by many all nighters at the Caldwells house. Driving right up to the bluff at Xanadus to surf overhead dredging sand dumpers. Sprinting through the trail at Seagrape to do the same. Happy hour roast beef at Bernards surf (and the two for ones!) Those keggers at Lori Wilson. Going from one bonfire to the next while hiking back from a drift session on cold winter days. No speed limit (enforced) and no traffic all the way from Ocean Avenue to the Inlet. Good Times, indeed...

Following is a list of original names and the names that are used now - 1) AP Shack (2nd light), 2) the Pier (Pier-less, Hangers, Hanger-less), 3) Gulf Beach (named for the Gulf station on the corner of SE 1st street and A1A) (Seagull Park), 4) Lum's (Perkin's), 5) Hamburg House (aka, Hammie's) (Buccaneer Beach), 6) Pet Den, 7) Mark Realty (Pelican Park). I am always perplexed how these names got changed. Too many newcomers, I guess.

Once upon a time, I bought a bikini for my X from Shagg ..... With a smile and a wink, she sold me on one particular one because it had "these easy opening latches on the hips" I promptly whipped out the cash.

She was right and both the X and I still have fond memory's of that bikini.

They had trouble getting started on "Little Egypt" (wrong key). But basically it was a pretty good show.

1) Don't forget the Royal Castle across from RCs (hence the name; not "Rock City" or any of the others that have been rumored). 2) Seeing Dave Fiester and Austin Pettit (I think the band was Fresh Juice, before Tight Shoes) at the Satellite Motel (under 21 on the north-south wing, with pizza and sodas, and over 21 on the east-west wing, with alcohol) 3) Boger's Bunch at the Shakey's on 520 4) Virginia Fried Chicken (right next to Balsa Bill's), owned by Mrs. Casullo and the best fried chicken around 5) Hamburg House (where Buccaneer condo is) - great hamburgers and a great break 6) Nort's La Scene, where my buddy lost his (oral) virginity with a CCB HS girl after a Satellite HS/CCB HS football game 7) Beer on the Pier (became Fisherman's Wharf, at which I worked) - free steamed crabs as long as the parents were buying beer; what a deal 8) Open market on the Indialantic Boardwalk (because the entire police dept was under indictment for vandalizing impounded cars, false arrests, etc, etc) (I was working at the Galley and Grog and watched it go down every night)

Yes.  I remember operation stretch at Freedom 7 and I have the original pictures that were published in the Today Paper from those days.  My family was one of the original Cocoa Beach families back in the day of the Apollo moon landings. Our couch (Stetson?) had us kids go out to the islands and camp for the night and go through all of that outdoors survival stuff.  I remember it well and have the original newspaper when it was covered in the paper.  Call me if you are interested.  518-306-6216.

Anyone remember Catri's original Surfboard Hawaii shop in Satellite Beach? It was in the NW corner of the building where Ricky Carroll had his shop. IT was maybe 20' by 20'. Shagg had a sewing machine in there and made custom fit lined corduroy baggies, for $8.00. My mom flipped when I bought a pair. It was there a short while, maybe a year, before they moved it to Indialantic.

Standard attire for us were pocket tee shirts from J. C. Penney's back then. Saw my first silk screened Surfboards Hawaii tee there. All of $2.00 bucks, with the extra large logo script on the back.

Bought my first custom board there. Oh, did we think we were hot shit back then, or what!?

Dingpatch - my memory could be going, but, I grew up in the neighborhood (my parents were the original owners of a house built in 1959) and my recollection is that we always called it "Gulf Beach" (because of the Gulf station across the street).

Well, they did live on the other side of the tracks.  Point being?

BT lived on NE 1st Court, behind our house.

Butlers, which ones?  Hughes, Mike and Patty?

The old Gulf Beach crowd, not gang, consisted, in part, of folks with names like:  Mann, Mitchell, Carrol (RC), St. Louis, French, Alward, McLaren, Wade, Temple, Robuck, Fagan.  Some of us were accepted at Lums, some were not.

Most of the guys being mentioned were a bit older than me. (I was in 9th grade when crankit graduated from SHS.) So, I'm not the authority, that's for sure. Just hitting my recollections. Other names - Larry Mann )(his mom collected lunch money at SP Elem), Walt Santee (his sister, Karen, babysat for me and my younger brothers), Harry Clark, Joe Nanny, Pat Kyle, Jack Kirschenbaum, and a bunch more that escape me now.

Dingpatch - 1) Yes, Patsy and Mike (right next door), 2) Butlers - Jim, Jack, Ron, Rick, Mike, David, Donnie (2 doors down). 2) and yes, all the old Gulf Station (I'm giving in on the name, but we all called it "Gulf Beach") names (Poo, Bob and Pat French; Bob Craig, etc) are in the "old friends" category, mostly from Platinum Coast Little League and surfing. See Bob and work with Poo French. Last time I saw Bob Craig, he was trying out for the Jax USFL team (or WFL, maybe?) - and he had gotten HUGE. Haven't seen Pat French in a while, but he is in the area. You probably knew Max and George Taylor, too. Still good friends.

Then there was" Bills bait and tackle" which was a bar/resturaunt , i'm not sure they even sold bait but they had the best homestyle meals there and the owner would cash everyones paychecks for them on Fridays- good time to collect money for the tabs he would let people run through the week. Another place that was pretty cool was " Fuzzys' second hand store on the corner of Highland and EauGallie Blvd. He had everything from baseball gloves to old fishing gear piled high and hanging from the ceiling. I bought my first surfboard there for about $ 15.00 ( had more holes than a spaghetti colander) i think i spent more than that on " Dupont clear cement " to patch them, i had only been exposed to surfing once by then and didn't know better - hell, i didn't even know they had surf magazines by then.
