We have a 12 year old Golden Retriever (whose secret to longevity seems to be copious amounts of people food), and an 18 year old cat who is sticking around out of spite.

But we're looking to get a small dog for our 7-year old Type-1 Diabetic kid to snuggle up with at night. Our current, ancient animals are way too geriatric or unable to get up stairs, so we're looking for a small dog to rescue and introduce into the household.

We've checked the Animal Rescue at the end of Eau Gallie and, while big dogs are plentiful, small dogs are hard to come by. Does anybody have any recommendations on where to look for a small, potty trained rescue doggie?

Not local, but there are several Havanese rescue operations on the internet; just google Havanese Rescue.

They are awesome dogs, great snugglers. Also hypoallergenic (human-like hair, no shedding), which was a requirement for our daughter.

Expensive too, so if you can get a rescue, it's a real bargain.

Havanese and the other companion breeds (Shi-tzu, Lhasa, Maltese, Bichon, Papillion etc) are great for hanging out!

Terriers not so much.

Our other little one is a Shi-tzu / Bichon mix, also very hypoallergenic.

The breeders call that a Zuchon; pet stores call them Teddy Bears; I call mine a "Shits On" because she does that a lot.

But I'm not sure how the small "companion" dogs will adapt to other animals in the house.

Our Havanese loved having the whole family to herself the first two years, but when we brought in the ShitsOn, the Havanese got real butthurt. They eventually became friends, but the ShitsOn still gets annoying when she tries to edge out the Havanese for human attention, which is often. Neither will tolerate another male dog in the house.

We thought the second dog would keep the first one company while the family was at work and school. But the first dog was so bonded to the family, I'm not sure the second dog was really a "gift" to her. Maybe a wash...

In your case (Dave), if you get the new dog as a puppy, it will adapt. Your cat and retriever are old enough to be pretty chill about it all.

If your rescue dog is older, give all the pets some time to break the ice. When the older pets die, give your new dog some time alone. If it's a "companion" breed, and some family is home during the day, think twice about adding another dog after that.

If your daughter is the one who primarily feeds, walks, and rewards the new dog, the dog will definitely bond with her and be happy to sleep there, instead of knocking on your door.

I always wondered why the Shi-tzu / Poodle cross wasn't more popular....

Just marketing perhaps?

If you are on social media ..... there are tons of fb pages that are geared to local animal rescues and "rehoming"

They have often had more small dogs when we looked .
We adopted Fred from there.

Lots of adoptable small dogs on these sites, you can look and browse. Good luck!

Underdog rescue

Fostering is also an option if you want to help out.
