Australian.  The novel by Tim Winton got a New York Times review in 2008.  Quite positive. The review's comment about butchering road killed kangaroo reminded me of a fresh email from New Zealand, where they have deer.  Guardian review.

Looks like a variation of North Shore.

. I didn't get that from the Guardian review, fortunately. I'd watch this (of course I enjoyed North Shore in a campy way, so I am easy to please).

It's not being released in the US this summer.  Probably behind the paywall, the Los Angeles Times has come out with its Every single movie coming out this summer.

Today's "On Chesil Beach" looks good.  British, no surfing.

It's not rated, but playing at least in Santa Monica, Pasadena, and one theater in New York.  It got an OK review at the Los Angeles Times and a longer OK review by Manohla Dargis (it's an honor to be reviewed by the co-chief film critic) at the NY Times.  Dargis lives in Los Angeles.

Anyone know an art house that could try a one-week run???

At least the film got its LA-NY showing, got reviews in the two most important papers, so there's maybe some chance of a national release.

On the other hand, "Annihilation," a sci-fi film, apparently didn't seem likely to do well in theaters so ended up being released more or less directly to dvd/blu-ray.  Got great reviews.

Tim Winton's latest novel, "The Shepherd's Hut" will be published in the US next week.

A bit melodramatic, eh? At least I don't hear phrases like: "Just accept the wave's energy, and charge with it. You don't even need to see." But then again, where would Johnny Utah have been otherwise?
