the WSL pros surf so flawlessly. they make it look too easy. They need to mix in some ESA and NSSA surfers to show just how difficult that wave can be.

"I wish they could slow the wave down a bit so they can do full turns consistently without getting left behind."

Shouldn't everybody have a remote to set the wave to match their floor routine?

And what about the music?

KIDDING! ONLY KIDDING! (I'd love to ride it)

I'll probably tune in, but I'm not feeling it like an ocean contest. Thought I would but it's not exciting me.

Nice that Quiksilver is one of the sponsors.

We had a horse race the world covets every 1st Saturday in May that millions watch, then you have another closed circuit contest with perfectly barreling tubes and someone calls this gay?

In my opinion, it was awesome. Yes, not our mother ocean but damn, who wouldn't want to ride that thing?

Everyone who rides it is sporting a 50 yard wide smile. You have to be lying to yourselves.

Just my opinion, but I thought it was kinda boring to watch as well. The sameness of the waves forces everyone to surf it the same way. Don't get me wrong, I bet it's a blast to surf, but a lot of the waves were ridden the same, particularly on the left. It was almost like a diving event or compulsory portion of ice skating or gymnastics competition. With the exception of falls there wasn't a lot to separate the performances. A big part of surfing is wave selection, and in this case that's a non-factor. The format for this contest made it a little more interesting, but the judges are going to have a tough time scoring heats for the tour event.

Saw highlights from social media feeds. And I agree with some of the posters above, that it looked like a big marketing gimmick. The WSL is going broke, and they've been changing their strategy to appeal more to the masses. Surfers can't sustain the industry, because we don't want to buy, watch, click... we want to go surfing.

I am not hating on Kelly too. This is a different chapter of his life, and if you have been following him closely you would have noticed it too. He wants to go big, and leave another mark that is outside of winning contests. Leading up to SurfRanch he had a bunch of pet projects, but this wavepool is the one that has the biggest potential to go worldwide.

I'm really interested to see a comp at the Wavegarden Cove now. It kind of seems like a mix between the real ocean (unpredictability, they paddle back out), yet still fabricated consistency. What do you all think?

Was this a real contest that actually happened or just one wave on continuous loop with different surfers cropped in for varietal effect?

I'm sure it was different in person, but that was so boring to watch. No unpredictability & the most half turns I've ever seen (besides when I surf).

I wish they could slow the wave down a bit so they can do full turns consistently without getting left behind. I'm sure it's amazingly fun to surf though.

I'm sure it will be a hit for the masses watching on TV but I found it a little too much of a marketing gimmic. Each time a surfer did well the camera would pan back to the team tent and show all the other team members jumping up and down. Couldn't get use to that. I was hoping they could change the wave up a bit to make it more interesting but it was really the same thing over and over- although it was interesting watching the pros milk every ounce of potential out it. And what's with the tighty shorts? Couldn't watch it a second day. Who won?

Video never does justice to the difficulty factor when it comes to wave quality and performance. I mean some of the mistakes those guys made were hard to watch. Parkos first two waves come to mind. When the paying public starts riding that wave there is going to be a lot of crying, wishing for a do overs. They will probably just soften it up for liability purposes.

And Catpiss, whats lame and boring is you, crying over a squandered career. Have you ever thought that maybe the reason he bypassed Kirra and Bells, was so he wouldn't blow his opportunity to be a part of the what may go down as the crown jewel of his legacy. Its called planning and priority. Those are life management skills. Get over yourself.

Looks like a fun wave, but I thought it was incredibly boring to watch. I lasted about 10 minutes before I turned it off. I'm just glad it's over. The high level of hype and promotion for this event was pretty obnoxious in my opinion. Let's get back to the ocean please.

Stumbled on to a few replays on YouTube of Kelly and Fanning, etc. That wave is awesome, 45 seconds! I couldn't imagine. The crowd was stoked I heard, not as exciting as Nazure but pretty damn cool anyway.

Only two things I'd rather watch more than the contest, MyCatSprays surfing it along with some of the ESA, NSSA groms, and the replays of a few of the surfers. I just wish they filmed the whole event like they have with other ones where you can fast forward to the wave highlights like in the old Heat recap.

There are replays in the WSL app. On the main page hit the toolbar on the upper left-hand side, then select 'watch'.

Three minutes between waves. This made for a boring contest in my opinion. Need paddle battles and not such a predictable wave. Felt like I was watching a version of downhill skiing only in water.

Kids who have never seen an ocean will crave riding waves like we all do and some will rip. Watching them transition to actual ocean waves will be a hoot. Their contests will differ from what we are used too, but I'm sure some of out local rippers wouldn't mind scoring some cash from a land locked contest.

Within ten years there will be millions of new surfers and in-turn, a deserved boom for the struggling surf industry. Truck loads of boards from QF, Neilson and R&D headed for Kansas. I think it's a big win for everyone.

"What'll it take to build a machine'll push a 15'er?!"

Well, if you figure that wave to be 5'

and wave power goes up as 0.5 times the square of height (deep water approximation)

the "machine'll" be 50 X bigger / more powerful.

And since cost goes up as the cube of size/power...

Just kidding, kinda?

Sad, but true, so that means the board builders will have to go in old school and hook up the top guys and girls at the ranches.

Ever notice that surf companies die when they get taken over by investment groups? They don't understand the importance of representation of the brand. That can be the Achilles heel in a new market.

When I was 17 and an ocean lifeguard, we had competitions with other counties. For the ocean swim races, they'd bring in a ringer who was an ace in the pool. They failed to realize that when the surf was rough, an ocean swimmer could swim way better than the pool guys.

I think the same will be said here. Easier to go the other way, ocean to pool.

Yep, though I did miss the first wave I ever tried to catch at Typhoon Lagoon. That was the quickest $10 I ever lost.

Yeah, that's called pulling a, "Crystal Cooper." Boardheads2.com March 9 2000 archive footage. I remember the video footage.

I was going the next month and remember thinking to myself, don't pull an over the falls on the first wave.

$10, who can forget 100 waves for $1000, but I counted on lightweights with us who didn't go every time and I'd get around 15 for my $100.

But imagine how much each of Ke11y's waves cost. Anyone know?

LOL, I missed my first wave too, but it was a split peak, so only $5 lost. Timing was weird, but glad I had a floatier backup board with me.

I went there once with a bunch of "older guys" who weren't in a rush... I got in almost 20 waves, but it was like a track meet all night. Ahhh, to have a heart and lungs in that kind of shape now...

It's been a while since I hit Pavones, but with a ski towing you around at Kelly's ranch, I think my legs could handle it for 45 seconds at a time.

As for the contest: Amazing and boring at the same time.

So, everybody's seen that wave now,

over and over and over.

And it's the same size every time,

so,

How many goats?  Body parts?  Feet (not the body part)?  Centimeters?

Calibration study?

edit:  don't want to prejudice this study with my own opinion; but....,

I'd say that around two goats or so.

Some of the surf companies used to rent the pool in the mornings while the expo was running and due to the party atmosphere, very few would make the 7:00 am start time, so I've done the track deal and you are 100% correct, it is a hell of a workout. We finally talked them into letting us stay in the water to wait for the next wave, which was good, because I was near anaerobic death.

e11even, I don't see many crowds at all, but then again, I avoid RC's, High Tower and the like on the good days and even if they do increase numbers, they won't be used to paddling, so I don't think they will be much competition.

You are right Cole they wont be much competition but they will be a constant obstacle and dropping in on people.  I do surf RC's and the better spots and its getting rediculous on the good swells. We will see how this all unfolds.

I remember doing that too, and the pool guys got about shin deep and started to swim while us surfers high stepped another hundred yards across the sandbar and also could body surf in!

Does that pool have a beginner wave? Only wave Ive seen it produce is the contest wave, which isn't suitable for learning to surf.

Drew Brees, the NO Saints QB got semi-barrelled there. But I think he may have got towed-in to one.

That's kinda hilarious now that I think about it, someone getting jet ski assist on a man-made wave. Wow, talk about times changing

Your kidding right? You want even more crowded lineups than we already have? Now we will have pool kooks coming to surf the ocean with no idea of surf edicate.

Don't get me wrong I would love to have a pool here locally to beat those flat summer days and to train in before traveling to a real wave.

Any one see the wave pool footage they released for waco texas?? Just by reading a little bit I think they may surpass the Surf ranch as far as variations of waves.

One thing is that it looks like the wave starts out less than head high and then jacks up to over head as it gets going. Reminds of Ponce when the rocks take off eventually jacks up further down the beach on a day where you can connect it through.

This wave seems to be about head high on Gerry Lopez,

which means that it would be head high on me too,

and also on that guy that owns the place.

lopez

I equate this size to about 4-5' and 8-10 seconds (two goats) on the 20 miler in cleaned up conditions.

Not that it happens that often...

My favorite surfers of all time in chronological order:

Gerry Lopez
Shaun Tomson
Tom Curren
Ke11y

Gerry, being the oldest obviously, and riding the youngest's wave pool gliding that left hand smoothly over the lip ... stylemaster.

Actually would love to see Claude Codgen surf it. Come on Ke11y, give him the invite!
