Everyone but the littlest groms can "remember when" for something...

Here are a few I was thinking of...

Remember when there were no webcams or cell phones, so everyone gave "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" on the way to the beach?

Remember when checking the surf meant 784-2400? (for the Central Brev. crew!)

Remember when Op was actually cool? (before Wally World picked them up!)

Remember "Hot Summer Nights"? (ESPN)

Remember not having a job and being dropped off by your mom at Tables for the day?

Remember when leashes were bungie cords?

Remember when Holiday Inn was "the place" to be in CB?

What are your "remember when's"?

Don't remember the thumbs up. I remember calling natural art's surf report. I always enjoyed Fifer's sp? reports. Then I would call the shop number anyway and annoy the employees. OP was gay but Gotcha was still cool. Don't remember hot summer nights on ESPN and this was before fuel TV. I do remember being dropped off at the beach all day with no cell phone or anyway to get a hold of my parents if someone got hurt. Usually between Hangers and Natural Art. I remember when leashes didn't have the swivel and they would get twisted really easy. "The place" to be was always Sebastian before the jetty extension.

Yes to all of them......here are some more.

Do you remember when the steakhouse on the way to Sebastian Inlet was open (Chucks?)
Do you remember Doug Deal's Alaki (sp?) surf shop at Ocean Ave.
Do you remeber the rockets in front of PAFB.
Do you remmber the concrete rubble in front of 2nd light (in front of sand dune)
I used to call 976-RAGE!!

As a kid of the 80’s it was

-        Driving 80+ MPH in the dead of night on I4 then throwing pennies and bottle caps into the toll booths on the beeline

-        Spectrum, Natural Art, Quiet Flight was the top boards

-        NEON everything!

-        Color Fades, man I painted at least 50% of all boards that went through the factory with cool fades, really dig the color transitions and blends you could get

-        Billabong Corduroy Jackets, OP corduroy shorts, Lightning Bolt T's

-        Surf racks with spring loaded cords that crushed foam, and laughing when you see boards on cars nose pointed forward.

-        Martin Potters Ad of him skying 15 feet up in the air on a fly-away, now surfers are actually landing them (more of the 90's I think)

-        Martin Potters Bulls-eye design copied by our factory and painted on many boards

-        Rainbow Bridge Article about Occy and his new lifestyle change to a hippy

S       Surfer Mag subscription getting re-newed every year

-        Pink IZODs were actually OK to wear

Mu     Music on and TV tuned tothe Weather Channel on muteM

-        Painters caps with those long flaps in the back to protect your neck from sun burn

-        Rat Bones logos, Ok more skate related but the whole Bones Brigade and early Tony Hawk killing it at 16.

-        Vert skating was everywhere, what happened to all the backyard half pipes?

-        Long boards, fishes, and fun shapes were for old people

-      Real music made with real instruments

-        Ok getting away from the main subject

This is TOTALLY why I subsisted on Ramen noodles as i went broke trying to pay the phone bills for making all those calls. I totally deserved it.

Neon boardshorts (billabong) WERE THE BEST.

"Remember long drives to New Smyrna and getting stuck in the sand?" -- Ummmmm may be.

How about the Melbourne Beach Casino, The BBC, Driving from Spanny to the inlet on the bluff and seeing the "baby rattlers" at Jack Forte's tackle shop, and no leashes were invented.

Just the other day I was telling a friend about how you could park at 2nd light and eat lunch while watching everyone surf and they couldn't imagine it.

I remember.......

Driving on the beach behind Fudpuckers ( now Coconuts )

Georges Steak House in Canaveral

Key West Taco next to Fudpuckers

When Spanish House was the only house.

Everyone wearing full suits except Greg Mungral

Surf Expo at the Tupperware Center

The perfect week long swell in 1977

Paved Wave in Cocoa

Brassys in it's prime

My first picture published in a surf magazine. A four page pull out poster in Waverider of Dawn Williams holding a Lightwave Surfboard.

Parking in the bank parking lot at RCs.

Punk rock on WFIT.

Skating Turkey Creek ditch, and the 2 foot half pipe in the woods.

Surfing "cherynobls".

When we had to actually check the surf (no cams, or internet).  There actually would be 'surprise swells'.

Mousetrap 1966 - I worked there as a busboy while in college and surfed across the street at the pier.

Later traded jobs with a classmate ... he went to the Mousetrap and I went to Food Fair.
Can't do that these days.

Sometimes, left my 9'6" in the stockroom there if surfing that day.

Other local fun spots back then were Winslow Beach and the Apollo bldg.

Good days at the day were measured by ..."if it was big enough to take off out at the pier's snack bar". The Snack Bar right.

So much sand added there now.
Back then, the end of the pier would only break if it was overhead.

Back to the 80's

-Web Gloves

-Richie Collins

-Christain Fletcher (Anti-Christ) and frontside punt that won Trestles, maybe one of the first airs ever landed in a major contest.

-Chernobyl's

Surfer Mag article:

As one of surfing’s most iconic rebels — nicknamed The Anti-Christ of Surfing — Fletcher evolved the aerial from a mere trick to a major force in surfing’s evolution. With his progressive outlook and aggressive execution, moves like the air-reverse and stale-fish became an integral part of surf vocabulary, especially in competition. But Fletcher despised competition. He notoriously claimed he “could[n't] give a f*ck about being a world champion.” His competitive edge? He simply “like[d] to go out and f*ck with people during the heats.”

Despite this distaste for putting on a jersey, Fletcher took center stage at the 1989 Surf Bout held at Lower Trestles. The event allowed him to showcase his skills on one of surfing’s biggest stages — and to, of course, go out and “f*ck with” the top pros. The PSAA event boasted the largest prize purse ever for the time: $100,000. As a result of this huge purse, Surf Bout carried an unusually large amount of prestige as well. While the then-unseeded 19-year-old spent his rest time between heats playing Skate or Die on Nintendo, during heats he ripped, eventually reaching the final where he would take down Joey Jenkins, Colin Smith, and Noah Budroe for the title and a hefty $31,725 in cash.

Parking your car on the dune at Spanish House.

Those days the license plate had your county on it.

Being from PBC we always took my friends, his plate had Brevard (for some reason) to avoid the wax job.
