With summer quickly approaching, I'm looking to add a new sled that will make surfing small slop fun. I mostly ride shortboards, so I'm a bit stubborn about hopping onto a longboard/funboard (although I'm considering getting a 8' soft top to compliment my Simmons).
Im considering getting a soap box/mini Simmons but I have a few concerns
1.) what's the best way to size them? I don't want it to feel very clunky and unresponsive but I also don't want to sacrifice the glide and drive thats needed for summer slop. I'm 5'10 @ 175lbs and plan on using it in 1-4ft surf in mushy/flat faces.
2.) How does a twin keel compare to a quad or even a 2+1 set up?
I used to have a 5'4 Lost RV (28.5L) quad as my small wave board . It liked lined up mushy surf and handled some punchy sections but it lacked glide in very small summer surf and would sometimes slide out when pumping or doing turns . I've also ridden my roommate's 6'6 soft top fish and have been have been able to surf waves that are barely shortboardable ... but it's too clunky and unresponsive to do anything other than go down the line and ride white wash. I'm pretty much looking for a happen medium between these two boards.
PS: I usually ride 28-29L shortboards in fun/good waves in the 4-8ft range
