The article is Gulf-centric but the story is pretty similar for the Atlantic side. I think this is a well written popular article on the topic.
My personal take: Population was fished down to a tiny fraction of virgin biomass. It stayed in an overfished condition for a long time with a very truncated age and size structure. As terrible as the recreational landings data were, the condition of the stock was pretty incontrovertable. Managers dithered with allocating the scraps between the commercial, sport-charter-headboat, and recreational sectors. Now stocks are rebuilding people out there see "more fish than ever". They really do too. There are more than ever if you've just started fishing for them in the last 30 years. The people out there weren't fishing in 1950 when the population was much bigger. They are starting from a small base line. The population on either coast is not yet at Bmsy (biomass for maximum sustainable yield) but stocks have rebuilt A LOT in the last decade. I went to an interesting talk at the American Fisheries Society conference in Tampa last August. When Maximum Sustainable Access Vies with Maximum Sustainable Yield: The Curious Case of the Red Snapper Super short Cliff's Notes version: The recreational and sport fishing sector would happily live with a lower standing stock of fish as long as access to fishing was sustained so that the fishing seasons weren't so damned short. ------------------------- ... |

I agree to what you're saying to an extent as I tend to be "pro-conservation" for a fisherman, but their broad based studies are flawed due to the geographic nature of our state. Up here in NE FL, if you're going bottom fishing it's hard to NOT catch snapper. You have to fish very large baits that can fit in a grouper's bucket mouth, or small ones for trigs (but then get chickens anyway) and still pull up a hoss snapper. We prob catch 20/1 snapper / grouper, but the latter is the one that's legal (prob because areas south this ratio is reversed).... Also, they need to shut it down 100% commercially if they really want to improve the stocks. I think there should be spawning season closures on most fish, but regs should be realistic also anyway.... looks like the population is safe in NE FL this weekend FRIDAY North northeast winds 20 to 25 knots. Seas 6 to 8 feet with occasional seas up to 10 feet. A chance of showers. FRIDAY NIGHT Northeast winds 20 to 25 knots with gusts to around 35 knots. Seas 7 to 9 feet with occasional seas up to 11 feet building to 8 to 11 feet with occasional seas up to 14 feet after midnight. Showers likely. SATURDAY East northeast winds 20 to 25 knots with gusts to around 35 knots. Seas 9 to 12 feet with occasional seas up to 15 feet. A chance of showers. SATURDAY NIGHT East northeast winds 20 to 25 knots with gusts to around 35 knots. Seas 8 to 11 feet with occasional seas up to 14 feet. A slight chance of showers. SUNDAY East northeast winds 15 to 20 knots. Seas 6 to 9 feet with occasional seas up to 11 feet. A chance of showers.

Bad weather definitely illustrates one of the biggest problems with short open seasons.

Want greater snapper population?
Allow offshore petroleum drilling and production. |

That could work, except for the occaisonal instances where the whole population of everything gets wiped out.(except for the oil-based lifeforms) There are less risky ways to improve habitat. Or you could let the population rebound to more historic levels(pre 1960s) and then have a much larger sustainable yeild ------------------------- "I remember South Africa in the late 70's, sleeping on the beach at J-bay, smoking ganja with the blacks. On weekends we'd go to the pub in East London to drink beer and fight with the Afrikaners. They liked to fight, I liked to fight. It was a good time" |
