My work truck is a 2016 Chevy Colorado. At 60K miles the rack and pinion started making a groaning noise, so I took it into the shop. I was told the issue is the Steering Gear and that it needs to be replaced. The gear is a single unit and the cost for the part alone is $1,200. Yes, the price is a shocker, especially at 60,000 miles, but here is the good part, they, as in GM, don't have the part.

I did a search and this looks like a systemic failure. Thank heavens this is a work truck and not mine. Just imagine paying $35K for a truck that attempts to commit suicide in two tears.

Has anyone had this type of issue with other vehicles?

Chevy is officially off of my purchase list forever.

Crap!

Ya, maybe if it was a 2012 or earlier, but a 16!

that is ridiculous ..... and I had been strongly considering a diesel Colorado, as it is the combination of size, towing capacity and MPG that I want.

Trucks used to be the cheap option. Now you are better off getting an SUV.

I just had that discussion with my son. Why is half a vehicle so damned expensive?

On my 3rd Tacoma, never paid for anything but gas tire and routine maintenance on the first two generations. The new one has an Atkinson cycle v6 that averages 22 city consistently for me. It produces almost 300 hp and can tow over 6k. I wanted to get a GMC this time, but it was thousands more for one with the same options that are standard on a SR5. You can't beat the resale of a Taco either. The last one I sold the same day it was posted on Craig's.

Because they don't really make em like that anymore aside from fleet trucks.... they're mostly rugged SUVs with an open back these days. I've been casually looking for a late model V6 manual kingcab without the fanciness.... good luck

Been driving the same Frontier since I bought it new... Sept. 2000.  Over 200K later, No complaints, (and no major repairs) but about time for a replacement.  Saltwater isnt kind to vehichles, neither is driving through Irma induced tornados been running weird ever since.

Tacomas are super nice, but $$... I'll prob be looking at another Nissan for Bang-for-the-buck

My 1st truck was a base model nissan, bench seat, manual everything.
Beat the absolute hell out of that thing as a teenager, jumping it, doughnuts, mudding it, even caught on fire from an amplifier wite with no fuse. Went 10 years and 300+k before first problems AC, then cooling system (never flushed it), head gasket and then differential was final straw. 2nd truck was a 2000 Nissan Frontier king cab manual, didn't keep it long enough to break it in.

Grandpa had one of the first Toyota trucks. I fell in love, epic fishing trips. Just had to have one too.

HA  Nice!

yeah... my dad had a 1995 4 banger, that had 250K (and he only changed the brakes) until it was totaled in an accident.

When I used to commute from St. A to JAX, I still wanted a truck, but something fuel effient, so I test drove a base kingcab Tacoma, Ranger and Frontier... Tacoma was a little smoother (but felt like a lowrider) and Frontier Felt most rugged & had the most zip (and was a few Gs less) so I went with that...... I've beat it like a rented mule since (towed a boat, construction, etc)  Test drove it with 4 miles on the odo... got 204K now.  No complaints. AC has been toast for awhile but these days I rarely leave the island......  Until I drove through a tornado spwaning feeder band preceeding Irma.  That was sketchy as hell, and It did something foul to my little burro

Next one will be a V6... want to pull a boat again.  The new Tacos look real nice, but people are proud of those things!

Indeed they are and they hold their value amazingly well. Great if you wanna sell but not so much if you wanna buy a used one.

Love my Rangers. Have owned two Toyotas (1974 and 1980, both SR5s) which were great (except for the rust on the 1980 version), one Datsun (1969, 1200cc, could climb a wall in 1st, but undergunned otherwise, but, still a solid vehicle), and at least three Rangers. Loved them all, but, for the money, the Rangers have outlasted all others. I now have a 2004 and it still looks and runs great. It has the bigger V6 (4.0 liter), which is not great on fuel (20 mpg), but, I loooove this truck. I was very happy to hear that the latest UAW contract brings the Ranger back to the US.

'04 Frontier here. Paid $5k with 70k miles.

Coming up on 200k miles with nothing but tires, brakes and AC compressor.

Routine 27mpg commuting.

When are they gonna make trucks like that again?

This! (not the "edit" part, Howard's observation, doh)

VVVVVVVV

Tom, Tom, Tom, , , , you poor ,ignorant, fool, everybody knows that having built-in 4G LTE Wi-Fi is more important than petty things like mileage! LOL

I had a Frontier for work and it made it to 280k. It had been under water, had the radiator ripped open and driven 40 mile almost on fire, had a hole knocked in the tranny fluid cooler that drained it dry, which I fixed in the field, refilled then drove 120 miles home. Yep, that thing was bad-ass.

I wanted another Frontier or the Toyota, but they got me the Chevy instead. Oh, and the F150 that I had before the Chevy blew the 7th cylinder at 105 thousand miles.

You all got it wrong...... ridgeline is where it's at. Only lacking Park is in the towing, but I don't need to tow and could easily go to say that I might tow once in its lifetime.

It is a 115% certainty.

I talked with the Fleet manager for our company at noon on Friday, he said he would call in for the part, then call me back before too long. He never called me back.
