Ummmm, , , , well actually, you should always boil water coming from Melbourne. I grew up on it "at the end of the line" in South Patrick Shores.

35-40 years ago I worked at a very large, state-of-the art machine shop in Palm Bay (Documation). We were having a problem with our water soluable cutting oils, so Metal Lubricants came in to sample the water in order to produce a "special" formulation for us.

Yep, Bill Sr. shows up at the appointed time and we draw two 2 liter lab grade Nalgene jugs of water from a wash sink faucet. Bill takes them back to the lab in Chicago. About 1 1/2 weeks later he calls me and is rather upset. ", , , , you knew what I needed to get, , , , why did you give me the water you did, , , ,? Ummmm, , , I'm rather confused.

Bill Sr. shows up with Bill Jr about a week later and I have to show them "exactly" where the water is coming from: ", , , , heres the main 6 inch line coming into the building, here is where it splits between the general supply and the fire sprinkler system, here's where it branches of to this sink and water fountain, , , ," OK, they draw two new bottles and head back to Chicago. A week later Bill Sr & Jr call me and they are rather amused. After the initial testing the lab guys had asked if Bill & Bill were still fucking with them! This CANNOT be Palm Bay's drinking water supply! We've tested better tramp water!!!! Bill & Bill report to them that they witnessed the draw. The lab guys were rolling on the floor laughing so hard that they got dry heaves!

I don't believe there ever was a boil water notice beachside with the exception of Cocoa Beach. We had a water conservation notice to help ease the burden on the sewage system due in part to lift stations being out of service. That notice was lifted Sunday or yesterday, although I read that 11 million gallons of "treated sewage" was discharged into the IRL anyway. Feeling pretty good about that additional tax to clean up the lagoon.....

maybe I am wrong (been so many times) but is not the Palm Bay Water treatment Plant much newer than the Melbourne Water treatment plant?

Maybe they vastly improved the water quality????...from the Palm Bay City website

• One 10.0 million gallon per day (MGD) lime-softening water treatment plant
• Two reverse osmosis treatment plants with a combined capacity of 5.5 MGD
• Three ground storage tanks
• One elevated storage tank (0.5 MG)

• A 1.5 million gallon storage and repump station
• Approximately 606 miles of water distribution lines
• 5,644 Valves
• 2,886 Fire Hydrants
• 32,000+ Water Meter

a neighbor said -  putting 11M gallons of treated sewage into the ICR was because the usual destination facility is flooded and we risk having sewage backflow into homes, if not pumped somewhere else.  sucks to live riverfront for the next few months.   inlets will also be high bacteria as well.

just a couple notes:

the treatment was likely filtration to get the chunks and chlorination to kill the bad bugs

11 million gallons is a lot; but, it's mostly rainwater; otherwise, it would have been processed and not discharged

incoming domestic wastewater has a median nitrogen content of around 60mg/L, the wastewater dischaged was more dilute because of the rain, but using the 60mg value:

11 million gallons equates to about 1200 bags of fertilizer put in the Lagoon

want to guess how much fertilizer is applied annually in Brevard?

the purpose of this comparison identify the fact that emergency discharges, "shoot" , happens

fertilizer, on the other hand, is voluntary, and, in most cases, unnecessary

Melbourne water customers in several municipalities and unincorporated areas in Brevard County were being advised to boil water after a water main break Thursday.

Water main break earlier in the day lowered water pressure
Thousands of customers in Brevard County affected
Water service to thousands was temporarily "hampered" but had been restored by late Thursday afternoon, the city of Melbourne said in a news release. However, water pressure at one point dropped below the state's minimum required pressure, prompting the city to issue a precautionary boil water notice, it said.

The affected areas are:

Indialantic
Indian Harbour Beach
Melbourne
Melbourne Beach
Melbourne Village
Palm Shores
Satellite Beach
Unincorporated Brevard south of Pineda Causeway (this is only for customers who receive a water bill from the city of Melbourne - Suntree and Viera are served by the Cocoa water system)
West Melbourne
City water officials are advising that all water used for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth or washing dishes, be boiled. A rolling boil of 1 minute is sufficient. As an alternative, bottled water may be used.

The boil water notice was to remain in place until a bacteriological test showed the water was safe to drink, but the city didn't say when the test would be administered.
